Countrywide is raising the minimum credit score for their programs to 620 on March 6, 2009. They recently just raised it to 580 for all programs. Countrywide is just following suite with other lenders such as Chase and Suntrust. This move to higher FICO scores is to limit the exposure of the company to risk. Studies show significantly higher default from borrowers with credit scores below 620.
Countrywide is also now checking credit scores on FHA streamline refinances. The FHA guidelines say you only need to check the mortgage history but now almost all lenders are checking credit scores on FHA streamlines.
