4.5 Miles of Light Rail Contract Awarded

A $40 million contract was awarded recently to start building 4.5 miles of the light rail system. The contract went to Skanska USA Southeast Inc. Work should start in march and will run from Old Dominion University to Newtown Rd. The work will take about 18 months. Hopefully Virginia Beach will get on board and bring light rail to the beach.

Homeless Counted

In Suffolk recently about 20 people fanned out to count the homeless. It was part of an annual survey to count homeless people. Only two were found this year. I doubt if that is an accurate count but it is one that you have to go with. The city although small population wise is quite large geographically.

No Money No Oysters

State officials set aside 90 acres in hte Lynnhaven River for future oyster-restoration. The only problem is there wasn't enough money coming from the federal government to make progress. The Army Corps of Engineers will probably wait until next year to build some artificial reefs when they should have the money necessary. The Lynnhaven River used to have the biggest and best oysters on the east coast until disease and pollution ravaged the oyster population.

Tea Party Part Two

Norfolk City Council found itself in the middle disgruntled taxpayers once again. The complaint is the city is spending too much money on downtown and not enough on roads, schools and police. The biggest complaint is the taxes need to come down because of soaring assessments. These messages were sent to the council by a grouped formed last year called the Norfolk Tea Party 2. The group is circulating surveys to gauge how much support there is for a 12 cent cut in the real estate tax rate. The city says they need all the money they can get and the Tea Party people say to cut waste to make ends meet. I am guessing both sides have a point but cities like to spend on big money projects that bring in big jobs. Let us hope there is a compromise.

Surf-N-Sand

A long standing fixture on Laskin Rd is no more. For more than 20 years the theatres, Surf-N-Sand, beckoned movie goers at the Ocean Front. Apparently there weren't enough of them or perhaps the 20 year seats didn't hold enough nostalgia for most of us. I don't live at the beach but my office is on the way so I drove past the place twice a day. Most times there weren't any cars in the lot. I think a free standing venue is a tough way to go. Most cine-plexes are in malls or located in a large strip mall. Hopefully the workers will not have a hard time finding new jobs.
