The Virginia Beach SPCA recently reached out and took in 100 dogs from the Whispering Oaks Kennel in Parkersburg, West Virginia. There were over 1,000 dogs from Whispering Oaks that were spread out around the country. The SPCA needs volunteers and money. Recently mosquitos in the Glenrock and Stoney Point area of Norfolk tested positive for the West Nile virus. Both areas have been treated by the mosquito control division but as always the public should be careful. People over 50 are at a greater risk then younger people. What can you do to reduce your risk?

* Repair windows and screens

*Wear long, loose, light colored clothing

*Limit time outdoors between dusk and dawn

* Use insect repellent

Liberty Tax Service recently announced it will build a 30,000 sq ft expansion. The reason for the expansion is that it has acquired eSmartTax and wants to move the operation here. It will employ 144 people and will be at the Corporate Landing Park, That is a good place to build and with easy access to housing and the interstate system.

Here we go again. Portsmouth has lost another executive. One in a long line who have left recently. Fortunately for Portsmouth, William Corvello was talked into coming back to work. He initially left citing funding concerns with the council. Since he is the seventh police chief to leave in 6 1/2 years one wonders where the problem is. A department needs to have a good executive in control of it and it needs to be for a long period of time.

The 80 year old Jordan Bridge is in need of $4 million in repairs and may need to be closed. The bridge carries about 7,000 cars a day and is a demand only bridge. City officials aren't sure if they want to put money into the bridge because of more pressing highway needs like the Dominion Blvd widening. I can remember the last time it closed and the traffic on the highway seemed to be a lot slower and it took longer to get to Westchester Estates. It seems like more than 7,000 cars a day when it is closed.
