Problems and Opportunities - Everyday We Have a Choice

09-03-09
Dennis Volz

I'm a night owl. Not the kind that stays up late into the wee hours, but the kind that sleeps for awhile then gets up in the wee hours. Sometimes it's like now. Sleep for a few hours, up about midnight or one then back to sleep for a few more hours. Other times it's sleep the night till 3 or 4. Then I'm usually up for the day.

It gives me time to think; to ponder; to gain some perspective while the rest of the world is quiet and sleeping.

Stephen Covey said, “Effective people are not problem-minded; they’re opportunity-minded. They feed opportunities and starve problems.”

Now there's a thought to ponder.

Everyday we have problems. Everyday we have opportunities. Sometimes we decide to let our problems overwhelm us and steal time from our opportunities. Yes, we DO have a choice.

We are in complete control of who we feed.
Every day.
The problems or the opportunities.

THE PROBLEMS: (beware that many opportunities are cleverly disguised as problems)
Take a minute and clarify the problem.
Decide what the very next step is towards its solution.
Decide when to execute that step.
Execute it immediately or put it in your planner.
Forget about it.

THE OPPORTUNITIES: (beware that many opportunities are cleverly disguised as problems)
Take a minute clarify the opportunity.
Decide what the very next step is to take the best advantage of the opportunity.
Decide when to execute that step.
Execute it immediately or put it in your planner.
Forget about it.

Life is really just a series of decisions. How to solve problems and how to seize opportunities.

Which will you go after today?

Getting the most for your insurance dollar starts with getting the best quote you can. There's few things in life more (seemingly) complicated than an auto insurance quote.

  • How much coverage should I have?
  • What Limits are right for me? 15/30/25? 100/300/100?
  • What deductibles should I have? $100, $250, $500?
  • Should I even have collision coverage on my car?
  • What about Uninsured Motorist Coverage?
  • What's MEDICAL PAYMENTS?
  • What about towing, rental car and all those "other coverages"?

Let me offer you a comprehensive view of all of these questions. Take a look at my blog post at THE SAN DIEGO INSURANCE BLOG :

and

10 Ways to Beat the High Cost of Auto Insurance (Part 2)

There you'll find all the answers to these questions and more.

Once you've decided how to best configure your coverage, then make a few calls. Ask some friends who their insurance company is and how do they like it. Ask if they've had any claim experience there. Be sure that when you call, get the same coverages for each quote. If they want to quote you some different limits and deductibles, that's great, but make sure you have the one configuration that you started with. That way it makes it easy for you to compare prices and companies.

Remember it's NOT just about the price.

There's convenience of use and claim service to consider. Do you want a local office or are you happy with a 1-800 number in some far off state? Lots of questions to answer. Just be organized and think through what you want. WRITE IT DOWN and keep track of the answers and prices you get.

Alsoo keep in mind, the ease and convenience which gets you the quote is probably an indicator of how other things like car changes and claims might go in the future.

Feel free to call me if you have any questions.... GOOD LUCK!
