My daughter and I sat yesterday evening staring with rapt attention at the photo of the African child we were soon to sponsor. The plight of children in poor third world countries has been a big topic in our extended family over the past 2 years as my sister and her husband have gone though the rigors of an international adoption and look ahead with joy to the time that they will receive their new Ethiopian baby girl.
My thirteen year old has been profoundly affected by their experience and in her teenager way has set out to make the world a better place. She felt that we too could make a difference for a child that has less than we do. Our solution was to select a child worlds apart that could benefit from our assistance but that would also mutually make an impact on our lives. We selected a 12 year old girl from Malawi and have already started plans for letter writing and e-mailing. She like my daughter is an athlete. We assume that in her village participating in sports takes on a very different flavor than in our suburb of Cincinnati. But with plans of a letter already in her head, my daughter knows she will soon figure this out.
To tie this back to staging and my reason for posting this blog...our $28 monthly sponsorship is being funded by the hard work of a Cincinnati Stager (me!) and her paper route owning 13 year old daughter. We have committed to pooling our resources to sponsoring this child and we both know that as a picture is hung and as a newspaper is thrown we can think fondly of the profound effect we hope to have on a teenager's life an ocean away.
