Historical and Modern-day Facts About Gwinnett County

Gwinnett County LogoGwinnett county was officially established by the state legislature in 1818 and named for Button Gwinnett, one of Georgia's two signers of the Declaration of Independence. The county covers 437 square miles of land about 30 miles north of Atlanta with the county seat in Lawrenceville, GA.

The population is approximately one-million and growing. Gwinnett county has been one of the most rapidly growing counties in the United States through the 70's, 80's and 90's when the population grew from 72,349 in 1970 to 700,794 in 2004. Though the growth has slowed overall, there are still many rapidly growing areas throughout the county and a great deal of economic development. Many of Gwinnett's historic old towns have been aggressively pursuing renovation and revitalization projects surrounding their historic roots.

Gwinnett county includes 15 different municipalities with a broad range of style, history, Gwinnett County Map of Municipalitiespersonality and charm. Several of these communities have recently or will soon complete major revitalization projects to restore and rejuvinate the historic old town squares and main street areas. These projects include innovative developments such as mixed-use retail and residential combinations amid historic factories and/or main street stores, as well as adding modern shopping centers and business parks. Buford, Duluth, Grayson, Lawrenceville, Loganville, Norcross, Snellville and Suwanee have the most prominent projects, but others are continually working to maintain a balance between modern growth and historic preservation.

Gwinnett's other major attractions and features include one of the best library systems in the country, a commitment to preserving green space in numerous parks and reserves, the area's premier facility for arts, entertainment and sports in the Gwinnett Civic Center and Arena, recreational opportunities on Lake Lanier and close proximity to downtown Atlanta. In the spring of 2009, Gwinnett will add the minor league's Triple A Gwinnett Braves to its list of exciting sports attractions along with the Georgia Force (arena footbal team) and Gwinnett Gladiators (ECHL Hockey team).

Make Animated Photo Slideshow Videos with Music in Minutes

I wanted to share an application that I've been using which allows you to make very creative and attractive videos with music background in just a few minutes from photos you probably already have.  The application is Animoto and is one of the most innovative, easy-to-use applications that I've tried.  You simply upload your photos (resized to reduce the upload time), select the music you want, click create video and then after a few minutes (longer if you use a lot of photos) your video is ready to quickly post on social networks, YouTube or embed on your blog (just like the one posted here).

If you are interested in using Animoto, then this referral code (nbrumovq) to get a discount on their already very inexpensive ($30/year) fees.

This video shows the construction of the new City Hall building for Suwanee, Georgia in the background of the Town Center Park interactive fountain.  Enjoy!

Suwanee Day Festivities at Town Center Park

Suwanee Day 2008 LogoAs the leaves signal the coming of fall, Suwanee, Georgia is preparing for the 25th Suwanee Day celebration. Starting way back in the 1980's, the annual Suwanee Day celebration has grown to be one of Gwinnett county's largest local festivals. People from all of the northern Atlanta suburbs will come on Saturday, September 20th, to enjoy the food, fun, crafts and music at the beautiful Town Center Park.

In addition to the annual 5K run on September 13, BodyPlex Family Fitness is offering a Suwanee Day Race Runners10K route along the Suwanee Greenway. Participants may run in one or both races for the same entry fee. Registration is now $20, and T-shirts will be provided while supplies last. On-site registration will be available race day beginning at 6:30 a.m. The 5K race will begin at 7:30 a.m. The 10K starts at 8:30 a.m. Both races begin and end at Town Center Park. Awards will be given to approximately 70 individuals in various age groups and kids 12 and under who complete the course. For more information, contact BodyPlex of Suwanee at 770/614-6140.

The annual parade kicks off Suwanee Day at 10 a.m.; this year’s parade theme is, of course, “Totally ’80s.”

Visitors can expect to find nearly 100 vendors with a wide array of arts and crafts ranging from stunning jewelry and sculpted "face" candles to handbags and folk art. Young children will be captivated by the "city" of inflatables to encourage active play, while "tweens" and teens enjoy this year's new addition of interactive gaming experiences.

The activities include a full-day of free entertainment on the amphitheater stage to include local favorites the Everett Brothers, Suwanee Academy of the Arts, and North Gwinnett High School drum line. The final concert, sponsored by 94.9 The Bull, will feature The Lost Trailers with special guest Ricochet to cap off a full-day of fun.

More information – including applications for the September 13 Suwanee Day 5K & 10K Classic, parking information, and volunteer sign-up – is available at SuwaneeDay.com.

Suwanee City Hall Clock Tower at Sunrise

Again, the view over the Town Center Park continues to change daily as construction continues on the new Suwanee City Hall building. I was fortunate this morning to catch the sunrise streaming through steel frame for the top of the clock tower being assembled by welders on the ground before lifting it into its final position 115 feet above the park. The beauty of the sky and bright orange sun surrounding the early morning construction activity reflects Suwanee's dedication to preserving its natural beauty and history amidst thirving growth and prosperity.

Enjoy the scenery and look for more in the weeks ahead as the City Hall approaches completion in mid-December.

Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center

Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center LogoOne of the many hidden treasures in Gwinnett county lies just a couple of miles from the largest and busiest shopping mall in the southeast. Hidden and secluded in the wooded areas just southwest of the Mall of Georgia is the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center along with its nearly 8 miles of walking trails and surrounding natural scenery.

The building's award-winning "green" construction captures your attention immediately with its multiple roof surfaces covered with soil, grass and other plants. The stone and timber construction is settled naturally into the varying slopes of the property with a stream and multiple water falls flowing beneath the center of the structure. Native plants of Georgia make up the natural growth landscaping. Inside the building the staff and exhibits are here to provide an enjoyable, interactive look into Gwinnett county's natural and historic make up. This is a great place for families and groups to visit for a wonderful learning experience. The center sponsors periodic classes, field trip visits, boy and girl scouting programs, and also provide opportunities to rent the facility for special events such as weddings, birthdays, cocktail parties, grand galas and more. Check it out!
