DeSoto State Park Only A Short Road Trip From Your St Clair County Home
It is only a short road trip that takes about 90 minutes to drive from your St Clair County home to DeSoto State Park in Fort Payne, AL. Spend a day exploring this beautiful park on top of Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama. The fall color did not happen this year due to the prolonged drought we have been experiencing. The trip was still entertaining and extremely scenic.
While visiting DeSoto State Park, be sure and see the A. A. Miller Dam.

The Dam supplied the first Hydro Electric Power in north Alabama.

A.A. Miller a self-educated engineer built the twenty foot dam above DeSoto Falls in 1925. This was to provide power to his hydroelectric generator below the falls on the west side of the gorge.

It supplied some power to several rural surrounding towns. The town of Fort Payne was supplied electricity from dusk to midnight. Later when the town ladies purchased electric irons the power was then supplied on Tuesday afternoons. This was the begining of electricy in the rural areas of Alabama.
There is a lot of history to explore in the beautiful State of Alabama. Enjoy a day and take the short road trip from your St Clair County home to explore DeSoto State Park.

Is There Is GOLD In Them Thar Hills?

The State of Alabama has been under a gripping drought that does not seem as it is going to let go. So far St Clair County is not producing much Fall color. The leaves on the trees are turning brown and falling off. In the area around Pell City, it is about the same story. I could not wait until Fall arrived so I could go play with my camera. It has been extremely disappointing. I did find an place in the Talladega National Forest that produced some pretty colors. What do you think? Is there GOLD in them thar hills?
