Speechless Sunday

Bambi

This is Bambi, emerging from the wood, one morning when the fog was just lifting from the meadow. He was looking for his mother.

There were hunters everywhere! It was not doe season. Bambi was too young for a kill. They were safe!

This is my photo. Feel free to use! Taken at Virginia Safari Park.

Buyers Want to Know! How Will This Tax Credit Help Me!

REALTORS want to know, too! On Valentine's Day, the bill is passed! On Presidents' Day, it will become law!

We need an inside scoop on the implications of this! The information will probably be mangled by the press!

Consumers will be confused! We will be confused!!!

My fear is that info will come out that doesn't give enough caveats! Sure, they will say to consult your accountant. Many buyers don't have accountants.

We need a small word explanation. That is so that I can understand it! I can't explain, unless I have a basic understanding!

I know that the collective brain of ActiveRain can help us all!

Thanks,

Barbara

The "Star City of the South"!

Mill Mountain Star, daytime

In 1949, a group of merchants in Roanoke, Virginia decided that it would be a great idea to build a star on top of Mill Mountain. Mill Mountain is within the City limits of Roanoke. This was a promotional idea to kick off the Christmas shopping season. The Chamber of Commerce and the Roanoke Merchants Association were major players. Later the groups decided to keep the star illuminated all year long. Hence, the nickname for Roanoke, the

"Star City of the South'.

El Paso, Texas also has a star on a mountain. It is different. I would never argue with a Texan about which is bigger, or why!!

Our star is 88.5 feet tall and has 2,000 feet of neon tubing. Initially the star was pure white. At times, the star was turned red when someone was killed in a traffic accident. That was, depressing! The practice was abandoned!

In 1976, the colors were turned into Red, White, and Blue, as part of a bicentennial celebration! Then it went back to white as a symbol of hope.. After September 11, 2001 attacks, the star was changed back to red, white, and blue.

I remember being amazed at the star as a child. Whenever we traveled, seeing the Roanoke Star meant we were home! The Roanoke Star remains a beacon, welcoming visitors to the Roanoke Valley and welcoming its residents back to Roanoke!

Night star--red, white and blue!

Information was not lifted, but I used Wikipedia as a resource! The photos are my own. Please don't copy without permission! Thanks, Barbara

Rates are Great! Why Wait!

Hole 18 at Botetourt Country Club Thinking about buying a home?

Now is the time!

This is a report from Roanoke, Virginia. "Virginia is for Lovers", you know!

Rates are great! Prices are low! If you have decent credit, money is out there! There are even some nothing down programs in certain areas and for Veterans.

There is a potential tax credit of up to $7,500 for first time buyers, or folks who haven't owned a home in the last 3 years. Right now it is set up as an interest free loan. You would get the money back next year. The House has passed a Bill that would make it a true tax credit--you might get back an extra $7,500 next year to do home improvements! This Bill still has to pass the Senate and be approved by the President. Hopefully, this will happen soon!

Houses that are priced right are beginning to sell. I have even seen situations where 2 people are bidding on a house at the same time. That is called a multiple offer. Haven't seen that happen much since 2006!

BEWARE of what you read, hear, or see in the media! They are preaching gloom and doom, as usual! There are areas of the country where the real estate market is really terrible! Foreclosures and abandoned properties are everywhere!

Roanoke, Virginia isn't like that. We have foreclosures, but you don't see them everywhere (by the way, those properties can be excellent buys, if you are patient!). Roanoke had fantastic appreciation for several years, but nothing like other areas. We have seen a downturn, but nothing like other areas. We are in a Valley surrounded by beautiful gently rolling mountains. The prices of homes in the Roanoke Valley have fluctuated the way the Blue Ridge Mountains roll--gently!

If you live in another area, check it out with a REALTOR to find out what is really happening!

It is time to step up to the tee! Hit it down the fairway! Then put it on the green for your new home!
