Thinking About Moving To Yonkers from Manhattan? Part 1
According to Wikipedia, Manhattan boasts a population of "1,620,867 living in a land area of 22.96 miles(59.47km) (1) Out of all the counties in NY, Manhattan is the most densely populated area per square mile "at 70,595 residents per square mile (27,267/km²"(wikipedia,2)
On the other hand, there are approximately 197,388 people in the city of Yonkers which "occupies 20.3 square miles (52.6 km²)" (census bureau 2003, 2).
I love the energy of Manhattan. However I can do without the overcrowded conditions. I have lived in Yonkers for nearly 16 years and I am delighted I made the move. On a good day I can drive into Manhattan in about 25 minutes. If you do not feel like driving to New York City, you can take Metro North and enjoy the pleasant scenic view of the Hudson River. The train ride is quite relaxing and seating is plentiful at both stations, Glenwood and Yonkers. I prefer to take Metro North on weekdays, especially during the day. In the night I prefer to come to the city in my car. As I stated before, you can get to the 57th exit in less than 25 minutes.
If you love the vibrant energy of the city, keep in mind Yonkers is just minutes away by train or car. Just imagine finding incredibly affordable housing in some great areas in Yonkers and being able to still enjoy the city life, with a quick commute to the city. Are you tired of paying the high cost to park in a garage? How about coming home and taking several minutes to find a parking space?, not to mention the parking space that you may find could be several blocks away from your apartment. This is not a major reason why one would move, but it has to be on your list of things you dislike about living in the city. Cost of living is probably the main reason why one would like to relocate, more on this in future blogs.
If you are thinking about moving to Yonkers or an area close to Yonkers I will personally pick you up from the Yonkers Metro North station and give you a tour.
You can buy a Condo in Yonkers for half the price of what you would pay for a similar property in Manhattan, with the amenities being just as good or better.
