“Fire in the Hole!”…..Funny Realtor Bloopers!

03-01-12
Donna Bosze

I have been blogging on Active Rain for over a year now. I have never seen any Realtor bloopers blogged about, but I KNOW there must be many! I’m not talking about brushes with bad clients or agents having a bad day. I’m talking about:

STUPID REALTOR STUFF!

I have been working all week showing homes to buyers so I have been out in the trenches…let me share a couple of my SUPER BLOOPERS!

On Tuesday, my clients and I arrived at a scheduled showing promptly. I rang the doorbell and the owners appeared to have left for the showing. (good!) I opened up the lockbox and unlocked the door. It is my habit to always yell out as I enter “Hello! It’s the Realtor!” …just to make sure I’m not surprising anyone. We are looking around and were a little shocked at how little the owners had done to prepare the house for our visit. We were commenting on that fact. We then proceed upstairs and noticed the master bedroom is locked. How strange! We really “rip into the owners’ now. We then come back downstairs and sweep through the first floor a final time before leaving. Suddenly, the owner (husband) comes around the corner looking like the cat that ate the canary. He had been in the MBR the entire time. Obviously, he had heard our every word. He invited us to go back up and look as he had unlocked the room. We had to start laughing and we scrambled out of the house. Weird and weirder!

Yesterday (yes, Leap Day) I was showing another set of clients a lovely home. I had picked up the very nicely produced features sheet and was doing my very best Jerry Seinfeld routine as I'm walking around, reading the features sheet: “The owners have installed a new yada yada yada yada and this is super because yada yada yada”…..you get the picture! As I’m talking /walking/reading, I didn’t notice the one step down into the family room and YES…..I did a face plow into the family room floor!

My client yells ”Realtor Down!!!” … his wife is yelling at him to hush and help me up! To me, it sounded like he yelled “fire in the hole!”

Oh my…… all I could say was “Will someone please call my lawyer!” Everyone laughed and I got helped up by my sweet client.

OK Active Rain friends: Please share your bloopers and make me feel better and the bruise on my backside not feel nearly as sore. Don’t be shy! Relive that moment with your friends one more time! Let’s start off March with a laugh!

Appliance Maintenance: Clothes Washer & Dryer

01-31-12
Donna Bosze

Keep your clothes washer and dryer running efficiently and reliably with this simple maintenance routine that anyone can follow.

Anything that affects a dryer’s airflow can cause the appliance to fail and possibly create a dangerous fire hazard, warns Doug Rogers, president of the Mr. Appliance repair chain. And when it comes to washing machines, the leading cause of costly home damage is hose failure.

Here’s a list of maintenance tips to keep your washer and dryer running smoothly and safely:

  • Replace vinyl dryer exhaust ducts with metal ductwork to reduce fire hazards.
  • Before every dryer load, clean out the lint filter.
  • Every three months, wash the lint filter with detergent to remove invisible chemical residues that can restrict airflow.
  • Every month, visually inspect the dryer exhaust duct for crimps, obstructions, and unnecessary bends.
  • Yearly, remove and clean out the entire exhaust duct line from dryer to exterior.
  • Replace rubber washing machine hoses with braided-metal ones to reduce the risk of bursting. Expect to pay about $8 per hose.
  • Monthly, inspect washing machine hoses for tight fittings, bulges, cracks, and leaks. Tighten loose fittings. Replace damaged hoses.
  • Always ensure that the washing machine is level and on firm footing.
  • Always use the proper type and amount of detergent for the machine and load.
  • To prevent washing machine odor in front-load machines, always allow the interior to dry before shutting the door. Families with small children, however, should not leave the door ajar. Instead, use products specifically intended to eliminate odor-causing residues.

Vinyl Flooring for the Bathroom: Stylin’ It Up on the Cheap

11-03-11
Donna Bosze

Vinyl flooring is moisture proof, non-skid, easy to maintain, and relatively inexpensive—a wise choice for your bathroom floor.

Your bathroom floor works hard. That’s why selecting bathroom flooring isn’t quite like choosing flooring for any other room. Your bathroom floor has to be safe even when wet. On top of that, it has to look good without busting the budget. That’s why low-cost vinyl flooring—also called resilient flooring—is the top choice for bathrooms.

Going low-maintenance

Water, water everywhere! If you have young children, that likely sums up bath time in your household—and a good reason to look for protection from moisture with vinyl flooring. In addition to being impervious to moisture, vinyl flooring resists stains, and is tough and durable enough to stand up to heavy use.

Vinyl flooring comes in 12-foot-wide rolls that make a bathroom installation virtually seamless. By properly sealing the perimeter of your bathroom floor with waterproof caulk, water and spills can’t penetrate to the subfloor.

Choosing colors and textures

Vinyl flooring comes in an array of colors and patterns. Smooth-surfaced vinyl flooring can be slippery when wet, so select textured varieties that provide traction. Expect to pay more if you want a wide range of style options.

Weighing the cost

At $1 to $5 per sq. ft., sheet vinyl and vinyl tiles are considered the lowest-cost option for bathroom flooring—ideal for a family budget. Installation charges add $1 to $2 per sq.ft., depending on complexity. In general, the thicker the vinyl, the higher the quality and the cost. Some types of thicker vinyl flooring do a passable job of looking like real stone and wood.

Installing vinyl flooring

One warning: Don’t use vinyl tiles for your bathroom floor. Vinyl tile with self-adhesive backing is a tempting low-cost DIY project, but the many seams are opportunities for water to seep between the tiles and rot the subfloor, resulting in an expensive repair
