So you are looking for a log style cabin and you're not sure what type of construction fits your needs...a full log home or a half log construction? I've put together the pros and cons of full log home ownership versus the half log construction (log sided construction).

Half Log Construction:
One of the greatest advantages to choosing a half log construction is the opportunity for a variety of interior finishes. You can choose which walls you want drywall and which walls you want to put wood in. Usually half log constructions are lighter and brighter. They offer less maintenance...no settlement issues found in full log homes so that means no slip joints or screw jacks. This might all sound like contractor mumbo jumbo, but it is something you'll find out during your discovery period.
Ease of construction is another big factor. With half log constructions, plumbing fixtures and electrical wires are installed the same way as a conventional home. No drilling holes into the middle of logs, and its much less labor intensive. For log home purists, half log constructions lack the true authentic look of a mountain cabin. Yes, your cost of construction is much less but some feel like a true mountain cabin doens't feel rustic unless you have full logs surrounding you.

Full Log Construction:
Full log homes have a super warm feeling. Nothing says rustic design like a full log home. The aesthetic appeal and charm is second to none. They are typically soundproof and very solid as far as strength.
As far as drawbacks, everyone I talk to seems to have concerns regarding the maintenance and contraction/expansion of the the logs. Yes, wood tends to swell and contract leaving air leaks and gaps. And I've also know homeowners who have needed to adjust their doors because of settling. All of this is the cost of log home ownership and should be weighed when considering full log ownership.
