AUSTIN,TEXAS - BCCP - MANAGING WILDLANDS - WESTERN TRAVIS COUNTY

Austin created a unique regional partnership working towards the survival of protected species. In 1996 a preserve system was approved to protect a total of 30,428 acres in western Travis County in Austin, Texas of species and their habitats. A conflict in the late 1980's and early 1990's between land development and environmental protection resulted in the community-based effort to develop a habitat conservation plan, the Balcones Canyonlands Conservation Plan (BCCP).

The BCCP is a system of preserve lands set aside to conserve essential and rapidly disappearing habitat. It offers sanctuary to a wide array of native plants and animals unable to adapt to urban and suburban surroundings. Their survival was in jeopardy due to their specific habitats being taken for roads, houses and businesses. Therefore they and their habitat are protected from anyone causing harm, habitat damage, or other impacts to the species survival.

The six karst invertebrates that are protected under the BCCP are:

1. Tooth Cave ground beetle

2. Bone Cave harvestman

3. Bee Cree Cave harvestman

4. Tooth Cave pseudoscorpion

5. Tooth Cave Spider

6. Kretschmarr Cave mold beetle

The golden-cheeked warbler and the black-capped vireo are two birds protected that we see quite commonly in our own backyards in western Travis County. In Canyon Creek & Spicewood at Bull Creek those properties backing to the BCCP enjoy the songs from these birds. There are 27 species of concern protected in the BCCP. A local community benefits when land is valued for its role as habitat and a healthy ecosystem is allowed to function.

NW AUSTIN - CANYON CREEK - 78726 - GOOD PRESERVE-SIDE NEIGHBORS

Canyon Creek tries to be a good preserve-side neighborhood. This community is located off Hwy 620 between Hwy 2222 and Anderson Mill Road. The residents enjoy a 57 acre City of Austin Park - Trail Head Park and their own Canyon Creek Park. Many sought after streets in the community are surrounded by preserve areas.

The community understands living next to, or near a preserve provides many benefits: natural beauty, interesting wildlife & quiet neighbors!

Several guidelines residents try to follow to keep from destroying the preserves natural eco-system are:

1. They try not to plant "exotic invasive plants". These kinds of plants spread from human settings into the wild, where they may out-compete and replace native plants.

2. They understand there are many resident wildlife to enjoy but there may be some not as desirable, so they try not to place dog or cat food outdoors & try to secure garbage that must be outdoors. They also realize they can call the City of Austin's Damage Control group to report a sick, disoriented or aggressive wildlife.

3. They try to protect water quality by reducing or eliminating landscaping chemicals.

4. They control their pets with leash ordinances and have installed "Pet Waste" containers to pick up after their family pets.
