Speechless Sunday: San Diego Bay Sailing

Speechless Sunday: San Diego Bay Sailing

San Diego Bay was made for sailing. Beautiful scenery, there is usally a breeze strong enough for a fun sail. And, of course, if you want more challenging just go rip it up on the Pacific Ocean.

Here is a photo we took last year when the RC-44 Yacht Races were in town.

Big Waves Delight Surfers and Tourists in San Diego!

Big Waves Delight Surfers and Tourists in San Diego!

For several days last week we experienced big (huge in some places) waves.  These waves were caused by storms in Japan, 8,000 miles away.  It was unusual because our weather was picture perfect, 70s and sunny at the beach.  Typically, when waves are this big in San Diego it is because of local winter storms.  San Diego has seventy miles of coastline and there are many famous, iconic surf beaches here.  Also, a lot of surf legends live in San Diego or have lived here.  Local surfers were ecstatic about last week's waves!  Not sure if local surf god, Ralph Machado, was out there but, if he was, the conditions were perfect.

Ocean Beach San Diego Big Waves

Beside thrilling the surfers, the waves also entertained the tourists, locals and media.  When I shot this video (scroll down) we were at the pier in Ocean Beach and the parking lot next to the pier was full of media trucks.  The pier (longest on the West Coast) was closed because the water actually was over the pier several times.  If you get a chance walk out on the pier and have clam chowder or fish and chips at the small restaurant right on the pier.  My video was just shot on my phone cam so it didn't do justice to how big the waves actually were.  In Ocean Beach waves topped 15 feet!  At Boomer Beach in La Jolla they were even bigger, 17 feet.  And surf favorite, Swami's in Encinitas, thrilled surfers with 12 feet waves.

Big Waves Hit San Diego Coast

Pounding waves could be heard a half mile inland.  Waves this big can be dangerous so only the most experienced were out surfing.  I heard one guy had his surfboard cut in half by the waves.  It has been over a year since waves this big have hit San Diego.  Luckily there was no subsequent flooding.  Lifeguards were definitely earning their money and had to make a few rescues.  At least two or three people received mild to moderate injuries.  For the most part, everyone up and down the San Diego coast, were just excited to witness the natural spectacle.  I love the fact that the sea is always changing and never get bored walking the beach, San Diego Bay or getting out on the water in a boat.  No, I haven't been on a surfboard yet.  Maybe some day, in the 1 to 2 foot wave range :)

Enjoy some of the photos we snapped the other day and remember to scroll and check out my quick video.

I have posted a few sunset photos but here is a sunrise picture we took a couple of weeks ago. No re-touch, these are the actual colors Mother Nature gifted us with!

Picture was taken in Point Loma, looking east over San Diego Bay toward Downtown San Diego and the mountains behind.

Start 2012 At The La Jolla Shores Polar Bear Swim!

Start 2012 At The La Jolla Shores Polar Bear Swim!

How to start the New Year? Hmmmm here's a great idea, healthy, fun and free. Put on your suit and goggles and take a dip in the Pacific Ocean. Tomorrow, January 1, 2012 at 10AM the La Jolla Cove Swim Club will host their annual Polar Bear Swim at La Jolla Shores Beach. Last year approximately 300 people participated. Many just wade into the chilly water (should be about 58 degrees) but the Master's Swimmers actually swim a two mile course. There will be lifeguards on duty and, at least one, on a jet ski. A kayak support team will also be there. After the refreshing swim, participants will enjoy Starbuck's and some terrific pot luck goodies. I hear several people bring fantastic chili and other dishes to help warm the swimmers. Weather in La Jolla Shores should be great, low to mid 60s!

Kellogg Park La Jolla Shores

Kellogg Park in La Jolla Shores is at 8200 Camino del Oro, La Jolla, CA 92037. Click this link for our video tour of La Jolla Shores, the Orange County Register (newspaper) proclaimed it... "The best beach in the area!" La Jolla Shores is certainly one of my favorite communities.

Happy New Year!
