Lack of consumer confidence across the nation is being fueled by the daily barrage of negative media attention. But here are the facts: The Charlotte housing market is still better off than most other markets in the country. While other markets have seen housing declines of 30 or more percent, Charlotte's housing declines are less than 3%. Dallas is the only other metro city to be able to boast those statistics. Our fine weather and quality of life, coupled with a cost of living 7% below the national average, are just some of the many reasons 40,000 people are relocating to Mecklenburg County every year.
In addition, construction costs are 20% less in Charlotte when compared with the rest of the nation. The downtown area is awash with construction cranes and equipment dotting the skyline. More people are employed in Charlotte than one year ago, and despite all of the negative attention on the banking community, we still reign as the No. 2 banking center in the nation. It's not all bad.
Money magazine recently reported the following statistical data comparing 1932 to 2008 which might help to give you a better perspective:
1932 2008
-13% Gross Domestic Product +1.6%
23.6% Unemployment Rate 6.1%
-9.9% Inflation Rate 4.2%
-8.9% Consumer Spending .5%
Things aren't really quite as bad as the media is reporting. Only when we begin to see the glass as half full will consumer confidence return.
