I have two friends that are commercial fishermen: Edsky and Frenchy. Ed got his nickname because of his last name and Frenchy got his name because he is a French Canadian with a very strong accent. Edsky crabs on the Patuxent River and Frenchy goes wherever the latest catch is.
Yesterday I ran into Frenchy where he was selling White Perch in Prince Frederick off Dares Beach Road. He had four customers waiting to get fish. I was surprised he had so many customers but where can you find fresh fish for $1/pound? He said the grocery stores charge double or more.

Frenchy said fishing is really picking up this week. He has caught around 400-500 pounds each day. He fishes in the morning and then sets up to sell them later in the day if he has a big catch. I will keep you updated throughout the season to let you know how the fishing is according to my friends.

Yesterday I blogged about making your small cottage more livable using furniture. Today I will give you remodeling ideas to create more storage and make better use of space. Most of these ideas require a permit so be sure you check with planning and zoning before starting your project.
When I moved into one cottage it only had one small closet downstairs. Adding a closet in a bedroom or a living room is a great way to add more storage. Below shows how two closets and a window seat were added.

Adding a window seat makes a room cozy and adds storage too. A window seat also allows you have more seating in a room.
Rearrange a bathroom to add a shower or turn a shower into a tub. In one house there is only a half bath in the master but it can be rearranged to add a small shower. In the house below it used to be just a small bath with a shower now it has a tub and a nice vanity.

In a kitchen making a half wall opens up the living area. Sometimes you get lucky like in the home below now offers a view of the Chesapeake Bay while you are cooking.

Turn a screened in porch into a sunroom. This is the most expensive option but can really add space to your cottage.

Turn unused space into a dining room, or an office area. In the house below I had this space in the middle of the house next to the kitchen so I turned it into a dining room. Upstairs in another house there is enough room in the hallway to have a desk and chair making a great place for a small office. In a kitchen you can add a pantry. You can also find space to add a linen closet.

I have owned several small cottages so I have learned how to make the most of living in a small space. I like the coziness that a small cottage offers. Small cottages with views and beach access are an affordable option. There are three ways I have adapted to living in a small space: furniture, remodeling and using outdoor space. Today I am going to discuss using furniture to make your cottage more livable.
The first thing I did when buying a small cottage was to get rid of the bulky furniture and replace it with scaled down versions. I also purchased furniture that offered storage.

Another ides that works is installing a coat rack on the wall if you don't have a coat closet. I will write about remodeling and outdoor areas in the next few days.

Below is a chart of the last 3 months for Vacation Home forecosures and pre-foreclosures new listings in the area. It is interesting how in February they declined quite a bit. So far in March they have inched back up again with 7 new listing this month. The chart includes new both Saint Mary's County and Calvert County.
Over the weekend showings of my foreclosure listings went up and I even had multiple offers on one of them. I have also noticed the vacation foreclosures have been going under contract quicker since last month.
