New Downtown Kankakee Website

The Kankakee Chamber of Commerce has announced a new website dedicated to Downtown Kankakee. Bill Yohnka, executive director of the Chamber, announced the website in a email January 13, 2008.

Bill writes:

As Executive Director of the Kankakee Development Corporation I noticed a lot of downtowns of various sizes around the country have nice (and sometimes not as nice) websites dedicated to the downtown area and the things happening there. I thought it was an essential marketing and information tool for the historic core of our area in 2009. In the days and months to come this site will expand with more information, more links, board members, incentives for locating downtown, photos and ideas for getting involved in downtown and in our community as a whole. The site will also include more Kankakee Farmers' Market information as those details are finalized.

Visit the new website at www.downtownkankakee.com. For questions or comments on the website, contact Bill Yohnka at the Kankakee Chamber of Commerce/Kankakee Development Corporation office, 199 S. East Ave., Kankakee, IL 60901, or phone 815.933.0462.

Kankakee ordinance would put onus on financial institutions

The Daily Journal of Kankakee published the following article January 6, 2009. The new ordinance would penalize companies and individuals holding titles to properties who do not maintain them. This is the second time this type of ordinance has been propsed in the City, the last time in 2004 by then economic development director for the City, Tim Schmidt.

With Schmidt and Epstein both running for mayor in the republican primary, it is easy to question Epstein's motivation for bringing the ordinance to the CIty Council at this time, but the ordinance itself has merit in requiring absentee owners to maintain properties to keep neighborhoods safe and free of blight.
