Gingerbread House Build!

This weekend (December 5th and 6th) Habitat for Humanity Toronto is hosting a gingerbread house build to help give Toronto families a Hand Up, not a Hand Out.

You can purchase a kit on the Toronto Habitat for Humanity website. These kits can either be picked up for you to enjoy at home, or you can book a time to decorate at the Delta Chelsea Hotel. If you don't have time to decoate one yourself, why not look into their eBay auction of Celebrity Gingerbread Homes.

Habitat for Humanity is a cause we at casaGURU strongly support. Through casaGURU Cares, with every free registration to casaGURU.com, we make a donation to the closest Habitat for Humanity affiliate. Plus, I'll be out doing my part by decorating some gingerbread this weekend :)

Vampire energy sucking... spooky

10-23-09

I caught this interesting segment on my local news last night regarding Vampire Energy. It discusses how when you think you've turned off an appliance it may still be sucking energy (bad for both the environment and your energy bill):

After doing a little internet research I discovered that October is Energy Awareness Month and, appropriately, a number of articles on the energy sucking topic:

ATTENTION BC HOMEOWNERS! Breaking news regarding the LiveSmart Efficiency Incentive Program

09-01-09
Emer S

There's bittersweet news for homeowners coming out of BC as a green initiative reaches its goal (yeah), which in turn ends the program (boo)... for now.

British Columbia’s LiveSmart Efficiency Incentive Program reached its goal of 40,000 initial home energy assessments and is therefore closed to new applicants. What it means is that only those who had their pre-retrofit energy assessment completed prior to August 16, 2009 are eligible for the BC Provincial Government’s LiveSmart Efficiency Incentive Program. (To read more go to this Canada.com published letter from Blair Lekstron, Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources.) This does not, however, affect the Federal ecoENERGY Retrofit Program (recently increased by 25%), which is still open to qualifying homeowners as well as the Home Renovation Tax Credit.

Not to worry, there are still lots of great offerings for homeowners in BC and below are a couple highlights:

HouseSmart Home Services is hosting a free seminar to help homeowners become aware of rebates available and how to access them. It’s taking place on September 19 at 10am at the South Surrey HouseSmart Centre (Unit 10-2320 King George Highway, for more into call 604-542-2236 or email monica@thehousesmart.com). If you can’t attend the seminar, don’t worry, you can always set up a free in-home estimate.

BC Hydro and 2010 Winter Games supporters are offering mail-in rebates on a variety of energy-efficient ENERGY STAR-rated appliances (from washer-dryer combos to refrigerators to insulation and lighting). Some of the deadlines are swiftly approaching so be sure to take advantage of these offers before it’s too late.
