Balboa Park's Free Museum Tuesday

My parents are in town... and today we spent some time checking out the museums in Balboa Park.
For residents of San Diego County, some museums offer free entry on Tuesdays. Today, the Automotive Museum was participating.
Here are a few of the nifty cars they have on display:

San Diego Automotive Museum 1909 Harvester Auto Wagon
This is a 1909 International Harvester Model A Auto Wagon.

San Diego Automotive Museum 1948 Tucker
This is a 1948 Tucker. Of the 51 made, 47 are still in existence... Oh, and the "Cyclops Eye" turns with the steering wheel. Apparently the other model had a rotating fender.

San Diego Automotive Museum 1953 Jaguar 120
The pretty one here is a 1953 Jaguar XK 120. It is known as the 120 because it can rech speeds of 120MPH. Zoom!

San Diego Automotive Museum 1981 DeLorean
Ah, the DeLorean. Head for the Clocktower!!!

San Diego Automotive Museum 1960 Bizzarrini
Lastly, I loved the leather buckles on this 1960 Bizzarrini P538. According to the information, only 3 were made with this Spider body style... and the one at the San Diego Automotive Museum is the only one that was made with a Lamborghini v-12 engine.

2010 Fire Run - La Jolla to Pacific Beach

This past weekend, I participated in my first race. I'll admit I'm a new runner. I started training with my husband in January of 2009 for the Disney World Marathon. Due to an injury late last year, we did not participate in that race. We are currently on track for the 2011 Disney World Marathon...

So the End of Summer Fire Run was a lovely 4 mile run from La Jolla to Pacific Beach. The starting line was in The Cove at the corner of Prospect Street and Girard Avenue. The flat route then followed Prospect Street to La Jolla Boulevard on to Mission Boulevard and around to end at Garnet Avenue.

La Jolla to Pacific Beach Race Route

Following a training schedule, Huz and I run 3 to 4o times a week around our neighborhood in San Marcos. Occasionally we are able to talk a neighbor into running with us, though usually it's just the two of us. Running with more than 2,000 people is a completely different experience from that!!

San Diego Fire Run Bib

The Fire Run race results shows that 2,078 people participated. I had bib number 1650 and completed the 4 miles in 43 minutes and 51 seconds.

The race was to benefit 5 charities, San Diego fire Rescue Foundation, Volunteer San Diego, The Make-A-Wish Foundation, Jeans 4 Justice and The Surfrider Foundation. Among others, it was sponsored by Radio Sophie 103.7.

The Fire Run was a fun race experience, and the beautiful La Jolla setting was perfect. I'm looking forward to my next race and perhaps joining a running group. (If you have any recommendations for either, please let me know!)

Whales Benefit From Recent Sonar Ruling In Southern California

Whales Benefit From Recent Sonar Ruling In Southern California

As of Thursday, January 3rd, the US Navy had been ordered to reduce the effect of sonar on marine mammals. According to the judge’s ruling, the Navy is required to discontinue use of sonar when whales or other marine mammals are within 2,200 yards. There will also be a 12 nautical mile no-sonar zone along the Southern California coast.

Military sonar is suspected to cause a condition similar to “the bends” (decompression sickness that causes gas bubbles in the body’s organs), as well as internal bleeding. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) also believes sonar is the culprit behind whale strandings. The NRDC notes more than a dozen whale beachings than may have been caused by the use of military sonar.

This ruling is especially relevant to San Diego, where the Navy has had a significant presence since 1907 and whale watching has been a popular activity since the 1950s.

San Diego Whale Watchingsailboats in San Diego

Each year approximately 26,000 gray whales travel along the coast between Alaska and Baja California. During their more than 6,000 mile migration to their breeding grounds, the gray whales generally travel alone or in groups of two to three.

The height of whale watching season in San Diego is between December and March, and while it is possible to glimpse the whales from land, whale watching cruises are extremely popular. The Hornblower offers three and a half hour cruises starting at $30 per person.

This ruling is a step toward reducing the effect of sonar on the oceans while recognizing the Navy’s importance in national security and defense.
