Education; your first line of defense in a real estate transaction!
We hear it all the time in our industry that buyers are not taking the time or interest in becoming informed or educated in the process of purchasing their first home. However, on the other hand, we hear buyers and sellers complain to anyone who would listen that their agent did not do a good job in educating or informing them on the process. We all know that the first line in of defense in working with your buyer or sellers is to have that one-on-one; the first face-to-face consultation that many refuses or don't want to take the time to do. So many of them flying by the seats of their pants; paddling up a creek without a paddle.
Part of my service to buyers, is a New homes guide that is so detailed with information on home ownership, question to ask lenders, and other services providers, that I was once accused by a mortgage broker that I was given my buyers too much information. I relish on information and being informed, so, I can't imagine not being having information on any matters that would have a financial impact on my family much less my financial future.
Therefore, the question still remains, is the responsibility of educating buyers and sellers rest solely on the agent or should these supposedly educated and intelligent buyers and sellers have no responsibility or accountability for their own financial future?
I remember when my husband and I buying our first home in 1996; we researched all the information we could find on home ownership, then the internet was not as widely used for provided vast amount of information as we have today. We flocked the bookstore looking for any books offering information. We purchased couple of books in the "For Dummies" and "Idiot Guide" categories that served us well. Now with the internet, there's no excuse for not having information at your finger tips.
I ask again, why you would make the biggest purchase of your life blindly and uninformed?
I just don't' get it!

In the short seven years of my Real Estate career, I have gained more designation then I care to mention. Over the years, I was taught to believe the more designations I had, the more clients I would have, endless buyers and sellers who would want to do business with me. What farce! Believing when buyers and sellers see all of the alphabet soups after my name, they would want to be entrenched by my vast knowledge. And in some superficial way, having these designations will convey some secret society, some members only club accessible to a privileged few. Hogwash! No amount of alphabet soup can impart skills and knowledge to do a better job for your buyers and sellers. The knowledge come from hard work and determination, from being out in the field working with clients, knowing what works for one buyer or seller, may not work for another.
Who cares about how many alphabet soups we have preceding our name? The buyers or sellers don't care. So, why do we continue to believe the hype? Who are we really taking the designations for? The truth of the matter is, we have them to impress ourselves and other agents, not our buyers or sellers.
I find that having these useless designations doesn't add any more knowledge or skills to my repertoire. They certainly don't provide additional income; in fact, it's the other way around. Paying high costs for acronyms no one cares about or understands their meanings. All my buyers and sellers want to know is how I can improve their bottom line, and that they can get the home they want and in the process you can get them some free money to go with that new or brand-use house!
The only people who really care about these alphabet soups are other agent's, as if it's our rite of passage to say we have arrived! Let's stop the madness. However, since I invested the time and money to obtain them, I suppose I will continue to use them!
