For someone who has moved around the world between Europe and within the continental US more then twenty times, I can safely say I am an expert at Relocating. My last move was a short distance from Century City, (Los Angeles) CA to Marina Del Rey, CA. Nevertheless I swore I will only move one possibly twice more in my life.
Needless to say I understand what it means to make drastic changes, to leave your family and friends and neighbors are sometimes emotionally painful. Then with that comes the anxiety to pack, what to get rid of and what to keep. (I am a pack-rat so I know the anxiety). Keep in mind the better organized, the better you plan ahead, the easier the Relocation will be. Also plan on things going wrong and the more you anticipate what could go wrong the more you plan for those possibilities the smoother the relocation will be.
I suggest a Plan of Action which should be written down i.e.: a Checklist. This can be done in advance before you get close to the Big Day. ( Moving - Day ). Things that you have to do to close the existing place down, from shutting down TV Service, Utilities, notifying the Post Office of the Change of Address the check list will be long and comprehensive. Then take that same Checklist and create a Start Up-List for the New Place that list will be easier. Before the Movers arrive everything should be arranged at both places.
The move across town is a lot simpler psychologically then across the country. Keep in mind it is just as challenging from a logistics standpoint, so do not be lulled in that you do not need to plan as extensively.
If you have Children and or Pets that makes it even more challenging. How to keep them from interfering with the move calls for its own plan of action. Then you have to plan for sustenance for the last few days at the old place and for the first few days at the new place. Take out will get old relatively quickly keep that in mind.
I could write a book and bore you to tears, instead I just want you thinking about all these mundane part of a' Move'. Then you will be exited how smooth it went and can enjoy your new environment and work on making new friends and exploring your new neighborhood.

As I sit infront of my computer screen I am reflecting on seven years ago the tragedy we faced in this country that changed everything. Here we are on the night of 9/11 and I was wondering what if something happened here in the Marina. Where would a new person that just moved here go, if they had an emergency, a medical crisis. I am one who last wants to see a Hospital or a Doctor, but there are many people that relocate, come to visit would like to know, especially if there is an emergency.
So as I did my research I discovered we have:
Marina Del Rey Hospital(formerly Centinela Feeeman Regional Medical Center, Marina Campus). Also known as Daniel Feeman Marina Hopital It is a 144-bed accredited hospital that offers basic medical and surgical services and has a 24/7 emergency care to the communites of Marina Del Rey, Venic, Play Vista, Mar Vista, Culver City, Santa Monica, Westchester and El Segundo (acording to their Website).
They are located at 4650 Lincoln Blvd, Marina Del Rey, CA 90292 (tel) 310.823.8911
There is also the Playa Marina Walk in Urgent, at 4560 Admiralty Way, #100, Marina del Rey, CA 90292 (tel) 310.827-3700 their hours are more of a 9am-9pm
with reduced hours on the week ends.
I searched and thought how scarry, we have all the Hotels, Restaurants, Grocery Stores, but almost no Health care and what if there was a cathastrophic crisis. What would a 144 bed hospital be able to offer. That is a different post. So hope you do not have to use them.
I am an avid supporter of Animal Rescue Organizations. There are many Causes we as Americans can and do Support. Mine is animal rescue, I am a firm believer what Mahatma Ghandi said is true. "You can tell a lot about a Society just based on how they treat their animals".
I donate from every transaction a portion of my commission to Animal Causes.I also market to animal lovers. For many years you could have seen my advertisement in Best Friends Magazine (Best Friends Animal Society from Kaneb, Utah).
More and more, I started focusing more on helping smaller Local Groups : Last year I was one of the sponsors of The Rescue Train's ' RACE FOR THE RESCUES http://www.racefortherescues.org

This small Coastal Community of Marina Del Rey, CA has a lot to offer, not only superb restaurants, hotels, grocery stores as well as Bookstores & Libraries.
There is Barnes & Noble Bookseller on 13400 Maxella, Marina del Rey, CA 310.306.3213. It is a three-story bookstore with over 150,000 books. Fantastic selections for whatever you are looking for, you will find it here.
We are so used to seeing Large Bookstore chains, it is refreshing to see an Independent bookstore as well. Technically it is not in Marina Del Rey,CA( it is 500 yards from the border in Venice, CA )right on the Boardwalk is Small World Books at 1407 Ocean Front Walk, Venice CA 90291 (tel) 310.399.2360
This bookstore has a nice selection of signed first editions books. As well a wide selection poetry and magazines are available. I love their Mystery Annex, it is cozy and well stocked for fans of this genre (you guessed it by now, I love mysteries) What is unusual, that here you will find published books both of major as well as small presses. http://smallworldbooks.com
If you prefer to visit a Library instead. There is the Lloyd Taber-Marina del Rey Library,4533 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey,CA 90292 this library was built by the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors in 1976. It provides access to the entire County Library collection. There is no affiliation to the Los Angeles Public Library System so you get a seperate Library Card when you join. They also sell books at a very reasonable price as well.
I would be remiss if I did not mention the Venice-Abbot Kinney Memorial Branch Library, eventhough this library is not in Marina Del Rey,CA it is also about 500yards outside the Border located at 501 South Venice Boulevard, Venice, CA 90291 (tel) 310.821.1769 it is worthy of mentioning. This library is a branch or division of the Los Angeles,CA Library system.
I have been meaning to to write about the Grocery Stores in Marina Del Rey, CA. I had to stop first and write about the demographics and population before. It is hard to believe that in this coastal community of Marina del Rey,( 8,000+ in Marina Proper or 18,000+ in 90292 zip code) there are so many Grocery Stores.
First I must let you know I love to cook, therefore I am passionate about having good and fresh produce. I am a firm believer the meal you prepare is only as good as the ingredients. The better the ingredience the better the meal.
So let me begin:
Gelson's is located at 13455 Maxella Ave,Marina Del Rey,CA 90292 Tel.310.306.2952 They have a fantastic cheese selection, their fruits and vegetables seem hand picked. Their prepared food is fresh. The store is spotless. The servers are very gracious and helpfull. When I hold an Open House I order from Gelson's to prepare for me a Fruit Platter and Finger Sandwiches. I have never been disapointed. They always have it ready and on time.
Ralph's Grocery Store(s) yes plural with in three blocks there are two.
Hard to believe. one is three hundred yards from the above mentioned store at 4311 Lincoln Blvd. Marina del Rey, CA. 310.574.0909(tel) almost directly at the corner of Maxella. The Produce are fresh and they have a decent fresh seafood selection. I can see that they try to compete with Gelson's. Afterall if you live in the Azura, you can just walk here and do not need to get in your car. How convenient.( I know if you are from LA you are supposed to drive, well amazingly they have a good size parking lot as well.
The other Ralph's is around the corner and three blocks from there at 4700 Admiralty Way,Marina Del Rey,CA 90292 310.823-4684(tel) Hard to believe they have a great Sushi Bar. The bakery is wonderfull as well.Try their Brownie Bites. I guess they want to make sure I do not drive to the other Ralphs.
Now if you do not want to be near the Water when you do your Grocery shopping. Then take a drive to
Albertson's at 13401 Washington Blvd, Marina del Rey, CA 90292 (tel) 310.574.0606 outside of their large sellection of Produce, they have one of the largest Liquor (hard liquor) Department. I do not drink the stuff, but it left me an imression. (I am a wine drinker...)
Then if you do not like the stores I mentioned above there is a Costco at 13411 Washington Blvd, Marina Del Rey, CA 310.754.2000 Hard to believe directly next door to Albertson's.
In conclusion I am ammazed that all these stores not only survive but prosper within such close proximity of each other. With all the restaurants nearby there is no reason to visit a Grocery Store. As I have been saying over and over the weather is great and it does not matter if you live here or come to visit it is a special treat to be in Marina Del Rey, CA.
