Within walking distance is the quaint downtown Village of Carlsbad with its mix of restaurants and eateries, antique stores, surf shops, and boutiques. You can catch the train or the "Coaster" all the way to downtown San Diego. Summer months brings tourists from around the world to enjoy the beaches and weather. The area climate is arguably one of the best reasons to live here.
I don't profess to be an economist, but I can tell you what I've seen in our own home town. It seems every time I'm out, I notice another business has closed down. Melissa and I actually looked forward to a nice dinner out one evening, only to find the restaurant out of business as we pulled into the parking lot! It was not only a disappointment, but a sign of the times.
I'd like to view this scenario as an evolution, making way for new and different genres of business. Not long ago, many thought the advent of the VCR, which would allow moviegoers to watch blockbuster movies at home, would send theaters into obsolescence. On the contrary; over the past several years mega luxury theaters emerged, accommodating crowds arriving in droves to see the latest blockbusters at inflated prices! It also created a secondary business for the industry where movies can retire after their theater runs, and favorite TV shows can be immortalized for fans and collectors. I expect a crop of unique and unexpected businesses to surface out of this challenging economy as well.
Computer automation also brought about fears of eliminating manpower and resulting in job losses. What it did in fact, was increase productivity and as a result, businesses grew exponentially. The next generation grew and perfected technology, creating offshoot industries in the process. The possibilities are endless with newer technology always on the horizon!
But today has its own challenges and most have been touched by the effects of the economy in one way or another. It has caused the involvement of the government to provide remedy, support, and incentive to bring about a healthy recovery. Consumers are adjusting their lifestyles and scrutinizing expenditures more than ever. Businesses strive to be competitive. It will be interesting to see how today's businesses transition into the next wave!
In my own business, we felt the tremors long before the economic quake hit. Already there has been substantial adjustment in policy, procedure and law to meet the fluctuation in the economy. It has been difficult to witness the effects of the market - the sadness, anger and devastation in homes left behind. It will be many years before or if, we ever see the heyday of high market values in homes again. Real estate will always be the ideal long-term investment however, swift, sky-high gains of the past will remain more the exception than the rule and rightfully, as the industry as a whole learns from past mistakes. Besides the obvious challenges in my business, it has been rewarding to help so many buy their first homes! It has been fulfilling to help clients confidently navigate through this market and successfully achieve their goals.
