Columbia, SC Why Rent When You Can Buy?
Home prices have dropped so much that the cost to own and maintain a house is only a bit more than the cost of renting.
An Opportunity for New Buyers
The housing slump has brought the own vs. rent equation closer to where it was before the housing bubble drove sales prices way above rental costs. The foreclosure crisis has trampled down prices. Low interest rates and government incentives such as the $8,000 first-time home buyer federal tax credit, which expires November 30th, is attracting new buyers previously priced out of the market. The American dream is getting more affordable. Home prices in Columbia are beginning to stabilize and should begin to appreciate slowly.
If you find a house that you love and want to be in for a few years, now is potentially a good time to make the move. With the first-time home buyer tax credit expiring and the possibility that interest rates will start rising, it might pay to act quickly. A year from now you might want to kick yourself for missing out on a tremendous opportunity. I am currently helping my daughter, who has always rented, buy her first house because I personally believe we will never see a housing market like this again.

Columbia SC Until the early 1900s the area now known as Arcadia Lakes was farmland and towering pines. It was called the Douglas Mill land back then and several multi-acre lots were sold to Columbia families that wanted to move to the country. An election in 1959 marked the official beginnings of the town of Arcadia Lakes. The Federal Census count of 1960 had climbed to over 300 residents.
The Arcadia Lakes time capsule was buried behind the Tree of Life Congregation in 1991. For some reason it was dug up and is now being held in a safety deposit box at a First Citizens Bank branch. It is due to be unsealed in 2041 by the Arcadia Lakes Town Council.

Winning $260 Million Powerball Ticket Sold In Columbia SC
Columbia SC The S.C. Lottery Commission announced a still unknown person has purchased the winning Powerball ticket at the Murphy USA gas station located in front of the WalMart on Garners Ferry Road. This is the largest Powerball jackpot ticket ever sold in South Carolina since the lottery began here in 2002.
The winner can choose a one-time lump sum of $129 million or an annuity worth $259.9 million paid out in 29 yearly installments. If the winner chooses the lump sum payment they will have created a federal and local tax bill of approximately $54 million !!
Considering that the cash used to purchase all the tickets that made up the pot was what was left after the government extracted their share initially, this is a giant windfall for the state coffers. Since ours is known as the Education Lottery we should see new school buses on the roads or updated classrooms in the near future.
Hopefully the winner(s) is/are working on incorporating themselves before stepping forward and claiming the prize.
Dear Winner(s),
I just happen to know of a nice lakefront property or two that you might like to own.......

Columbia SC
Within two decades of General Sherman's march through town the Columbia Street Railway Company was formed in 1882. The first trolley cars were hand-crafted from the ground up featuring hand-milled oak woodwork and solid brass hardware and were pulled by horses.
Ten years later, in 1892 the Columbia Electric Street Railway, Light and Power Company was formed and within a year electric streetcars were rolling in Columbia. These electric streetcars were the main source of revenue for the company and soon the houses along the streetcar routes had power delivered to them.

These trolleys helped the suburbs grow. The trolley line owned a casino at Hyatt Park in North Columbia where vaudeville acts performed weekly. Located nearby was a zoo and a bowling alley.
Riding the "beltline", which looped around a section of town, became a popular pastime. The Shandon Pavilion, which was close to today's Five Points area was a favorite destination of riders. The Pavilion sponsored concerts and dances for Columbians and nearby rural neighbors.
The street railways were the catalyst for expanding Columbia's new neighborhoods like Colonial Heights and Eau Claire.
The trolley became the symbol of an era, and Columbia was growing like never before.
