Grand Opening of The Soleri Bridge in Waterfront District Scottsdale Az

Built southwest of Scottsdale and Camelback roads in the Downtown Scottsdale Waterfront District , the Soleri Bridge was designed as a pedestrian passage and gathering place. At $3.2 million, it is the largest installation ever undertaken by Scottsdale Public Art.

Soleri, 91, didn't speak at the preview party on 12/10/2010 that kicked off a weekend filled with Soleri events, including the bridge dedication at noon today and an exhibition at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Downtown Scottsdale.

Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane led a champagne toast Friday, calling for people to "raise our glasses to those who raised this bridge", in the Downtown Scottsdale Waterfront District.

Work by Howard S. Wright Constructions began in March on the 130-foot-long bridge that crosses the Arizona Canal from the Downtown Scottsdale Waterfront District on the north to the retail and dining establishments on the south.The bridge widens from 18 to 27 feet and opens onto a 22,000-square-foot plaza. The plaza features 10 8-foot concrete panels etched with Soleri designs.

Perhaps the most gleaming features are two 64-foot brushed-steel pylons that will generate a light beam on the walking surface of the bridge to mark solar events.

Jones an engineer, said he talked to about the pylons and the cables that stretch from the top to the end of the bridge."It makes it look like a real suspension bridge," Jones said.

The Soleri bridge adds to the vibrant nightlife and the surrounding restaurants, art galleries and shops of the Downtown Scottsdale Waterfront District
