Moving to a new area is never easy, but many people find it especially difficult in Grand Rapids, MI. I moved to the area, from Chicago, about 10 years ago. I remember the difficulty of "breaking in". Ultimately I think it is so difficult because there are so many that have lived here all their lives. They are busy with their family and friends and don't have room for more people in their lives. However, I found a few ways to break in and make friends quickly.
The first thing I did was join a local MOPS group. If you are unfamiliar with this group it is for young moms with children not yet in school. They offered child care while I chatted with other moms and learned how to be a better mom. It was in this group I found woman in the same boat as me and gained valuable friendships.
The next helpful tool was the local gym. Grand Rapids has two large gyms, MVP and East Hills. I would take tennis lessons while my son played with children his age. I no longer have the time to use what I learned those years ago in tennis, but it was fun while it lasted.
Kent County Medical Society is also a way to meet people and get involved in the community. I was able to volunteer my time to help those in my community and around the world. It is a great organization.
If you are moving to the area or have lived her awhile and still looking to plug in give these suggestions a try. Let me know how they work for you.
