Since I specialize in referrals to and from Latin America, I am often asked exactly what countries I mean. In the United States and Canada, the term is generally used to refer to all of the countries south of the United States including the Caribbean.(This is definition that I have been using).
Another definition would be all of the lands which were settled by countries using the Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese & French). This definition is not often used because it would include much of the United States and Canada.
Another definition would refer to countries currently using one of the Romance languages. It gets even more confusing because there are 12 countries south of the United States that are English-speaking, four countries that are French-speaking and another three that are Dutch-speaking.
This map shows the countries that I refer to in my posts.

One of the dramatic buildings that you will see near the center of Mexico City is Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts). Sometimes just called the Opera House of Mexico City.
It was completed in 1934 and since then has hosted many dramatic performances of opera, theater, music and dance. Among the noted performers have been Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti and the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico.
It has also been the scene of excellent art exhibits including sculpture, paintings and photography. There are also permanent murals including some by Diego Rivera and Siqueiros.
If you visit Mexico City, don't miss the Palacio de Bellas Artes.

The first city that we will discuss in this series is San Miguel de Allende. It is located in the central highlands of Mexico in the state of Guanajuato, northwest of Mexico City.
There are about 8,000 to 12,000 foreigners here in a population of approximately 140,000. There are enough residents from the US that a US consulate has been established.
San Miguel has become an art center and attracts many creative expatriates. There are many art galleries, festivals and events. There is always something interesting to do in this community.
The climate is moderate -- not too hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter.
The city is beautiful with a lot of colonial architecture. Due to the number of foreigners, property prices are rather high. A tiny home will start at about $80,000 and it is easy to find homes for sale at $3,000,000 to $4,000,000. Monthly rentals start at about $600.
It is about ten hours to the US border by car and less than one hour to the nearest international airport in Queretaro.
This series is designed to be interactive. Please send me your questions about Mexico so that I can answer them. For other articles in the series click here.
