My brother, niece, husband and I visited The Greenbrier Resort over the weekend. It was just for a day to show my niece, Hannah, this fantastic resort only ten miles from our home in Lewisburg, WV.
My niece was very impressed with The Greenbrier as we walked through the halls. She was amazed at the beautiful, fresh bouquet of flowers on the tables throughout the Resort.

We loved the shops especially the women's clothing and jewelry shops. Our favorite stop was the Greenbrier Gourmet Shop where you will find everything for the kitchen, including food. Even my husband and brother liked this store.....for one reason....the food. While they enjoyed a cup of Starbucks coffee at the Gourmet Café, located inside the Gourmet Shoppe, my niece and I browsed through the Greenbrier's unique line of signature products. The Gourmet Shoppe carries the latest cooking tools and utensils, along with a vast selection of cookbooks.
While at the Greenbrier Gourmet Shoppe we were lucky to see a culinary demonstration by Michelle Masters. Michelle has been a Greenbrier Chef for 19 years, and was in the process of a demonstration. We were going to go to lunch, but decided to watch Michelle prepare fresh salmon and asparagus. It is always fun to watch food being prepared and you can always get some great tips....not to mention a sample.

Needless to say, I bought the skillet and sauces that were used to prepare the food. The food was prepared perfectly and everyone received a small plate of salmon and asparagus. Ummmm .....it was absolutely delicious.
Here is the recipe for the Wasabi Salmon:
It is so delicious and easy to prepare. If you cannot find the Wasabi Sauce, call the Greenbrier Gourmet Shoppe (800-321-1168), and they will be glad to mail an order.
If you are a guest at the Greenbrier or just stopping in to shop, or eat at one of the great restaurants, stop by the Gourmet Shoppe, browse, sip a Starbucks coffee, and watch one of Michelle's demonstrations. Her kitchen is opened at 11:00 a.m. and again at 2:00 p.m., from Tuesday through Saturday.

I had a closing on Thursday, August 6, which I would not be able to attend as I was having surgery at the UVA Hospital in Charlottesville, VA. The selling agent was from my office, and had informed me everything was ready and not to worry.
The following week I found out that there was a BIG problem. The lender for this loan, Taylor, Bean and Whittaker, a national mortgage lending company, had to cease all origination operations effective immediatetly, and would not be able to close or fund any mortgage loans currently pending in its pipeline.
Dianne Beale, Assistant VP, Mortgage Lending at the First National Bank was providing the VA lender. She had received word Tuesday, August 4th, about Taylor, Bean and Whitaker and our closing was to be on August 6th.
This could have been a calamity......but turned out to be a blessing because of Dianne Beale
As before, Dianne Beale and First National Bank Saved the day for me. The First National Bank took the loan at 100%, and the closing took place as scheduled. All parties were so relieved and it was a smooth closing after all.......thanks to Dianne Beale and the First National Bank.

My husband had purchased a beautiful Citizen Echo Watch with a pearl face surrounded by diamonds for my birthday. The band was too large and I stopped to have a link removed. I had a chance to meet the owners, and some of the staff....everyone was so friendly. As I was taking photos for this post, a link was removed from my new watch, and a new battery put in another watch. I got service with a smile.
Lewisburg Diamond and Gold has something for everyone. Stop by today and buy some jewelry for yourself or a gift for a loved one....my husband did.

Plans for building The Bunker at the Greenbrier Resort started in 1956 and was completed in 1962. The Bunker was to be the U.S. Government Relocation facility under the West Virginia Wing of The Greenbrier.
In the event of a national emergency, the 112,544 sq. ft. facility would have been activated and used by the US Congress and support staff.

The award-winning Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, was an ideal location for the facility. Located 250 miles from Washington DC, the resort is easily accessible by air, auto or train.
During the 30 years that the bunker was a secret, groups were meeting there and enjoying theme parties and dinners, without realizing they were in a top-secret government facility. They never realized that the Exhibit Hall was actually designed to be the work place for Congressional staff or that the Mountaineer Room and Governor's Hall would easily accommodate the US Senate and House of Representatives.
But, the secret was out .............The Washington Post exposed the facility on May 31, 1992. On July 31, 1995, the U.S. Government ended the lease agreement and The Greenbrier began offering tours of the facility in December 1995.
My brother and two sisters went on a tour of the Bunker last year and found it very exciting to tour this facility. The 90-minute walking tour of the facility is fully guided and narrated. No cameras, electronic equipment or cell phones are permitted on the Bunker Tour.
During the tour, guests view a seven-minute video that provides an overview of the Cold War era and details why The Greenbrier was selected for this former government relocation facility.
Only the Exhibition Gallery is on the tour, not the entire Bunker. The Exhibition Gallery provides background on four aspects of the bunker's overall mission: to serve as an emergency relocation facility for the U.S. Congress.
The exhibition gallery includes materials once utilized in the communications center, security areas, dormitories, and medical clinic while the facility was maintained in a constant state of readiness. Photographs, documents, maps and other materials, convey the complexity of the plan to activate the bunker and the detailed steps that would have been necessary to ensure the continuity of the U.S. government in the event of a national nuclear threat.
The bunker has four entrances; three that lead to The Greenbrier's grounds and one that connects to the main building. The West Tunnel entrance is protected by a 25-ton blast door, a door that opens with only 50 lbs. of pressure.
The bunker included 18 dormitories, designed to accommodate over 1,100 people in bunk beds. The facility also contained a power plant with three 25,000-gallon water storage tanks and purification equipment as well as three 14,000-gallon diesel fuel storage tanks. In addition to the communications area, which included a television production area and audio recording booths, the bunker also had a clinic area with 12 hospital beds, medical and dental operating rooms, laboratory, pharmacy and intensive care unit.
Tours are offered daily, departing from The Greenbrier. The cost of the tour is $30 per adult and $15 per child, ages 10-18. (The tour is available for persons ten years of age and older.)
Reservations are required and may be made by calling Linda Walls, Manager of Bunker Tours at 304-536-7810.

Blackwell's Restaurantis located in the Elks Country Club in Lewisburg, West Virginia. We have eaten at Blackwell's many times, and still think that it is one of the best hidden gems in Lewisburg. Blackwell's has the very best food and atmosphere in the Greenbrier Valley. Sitting inside or outside on the deck, patrons have the views of the golf course and the mountains. The restaurant is opened to the public.
The owners are Tim and LeeAnn Rodgers. Tim is a Five-Star Chef. They have been the proprietors since 2006. Tim and LeeAnn met while working at the Greenbrier Resort. Tim was a chef and LeeAnn was attending the Chef's School. Years later they opened Blackwell's Restaurant and business has been very prosperous for them.
Besides the great food, and service, fresh flowers, attention to details and a casual atmosphere is what you will find at Blackwell's Restaurant. The menu varies from seafood to steaks prepared by the Chef...Tim Rodgers. Below are just a few main dishes, appetizers and dessert....ummm so good!
