5 month old lion cubs, Granby and Neka, made their first public outing a few weeks ago. I wasn't able to make it but was told that the rainy weather didn't stop the cubs from having a good time playing with each other. Neka is the female and appears to be the more aggressive of the two. She has been seen fighting her mom Zola, for food and tearing at the mane of her father Mramba. I don't have any pictures but you can follow this link to the cub cam and if you are lucky you can watch from your computer screen.

A local environmental group, The Elizabeth River Project, was awarded $1.2 million dollars recently for clean up projects. The federal grant was the largest the group has received and one of the few granted this year. Most of the money will be spent along a stretch of river in Chesapeake known as Money Point. This peninsula was once the home of factories that produced fertilizers, chemicals and creosote. The EPA dollars will be used to help alleviate a creosote hot-spot that is one of the worst in in the world. The group will construct 2 acres of tidal wetlands, 4 acres of wetlands and another 4 acres of clean bottom habitat. It won't entirely clean the area but will go a long way. Remember, what is good for the river is good for the bay.

No job application? Wow that's pretty good but considering that Selena Cuffee-Glen has been with the city since 2005, maybe none was needed. She won Vice Mayor Curtis Milteer over on a trip to New York. City officials were trying to get the nations top three bond rating agencies to improve the cities outlook financially. Cuffee-Glenn played an important role and two of the three agencies responded by withdrawing their "negative outlook". Most everybody thought of her when Jim Johnson, the current city manager, announced his retirement. There was talk of looking outside but sometimes it pays to promote from within.

Gov. Kaine has called for a statewide ban on smoking in restaurants and bars. Kaine was recently at the Hot Una Bar & Grill when he made the announcement. The Hot Tuna is already a smoke-free restaurant. There is sure to be lively debate on this subject seeing on how Virginia kind of grew up on tobacco. Several cities including Virginia Beach have asked the legislature to let them ban smoking in restaurant and bars. Stay tuned.

Fairmont Park was established around 1904 and the lots started at $92.00. As a place for homes it didn't really take off for twenty years. Then it was found by World War 1 vets and off it went. The streets were named for famed battles such as Verdun, Marne, Bapaume, the bloddy Somme and the infamos Vimy Ridge. The leaders are also acknowledge with streets such as Pershing and Kitchener. Next time you take a trip through Norfolk, take a trip through Fairmont Park and remember the fallen heros.

I sell residential properties in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Norfolk and Portsmouth. This includes resell and new homes in all price ranges. I have not learned to do niche marketing yet as I like the various types of homes out there. My normal price range is in the 180k to 600k range although I have sold properties in the higher price ranges. My office specializes in beach properties and we routinely list and sell homes in the million dollar range. The price is nice but you don't do many of those a year.
