Growing up as a kid, my dad worked for Hallmark Cards (headquartered in Kansas City, Mo.) and through his diligent work he was constantly being promoted. In my first 12 years I honestly can't recall how many towns we lived in. It seems we would move every few years between St Louis and Kansas City.
It was an odd childhood, I recall one town in particular where it was the second time we moved there. Going to school it was strange to hear kids ask, "Hey, remember me?" I didn't remember them from the last time we had lived there. Don't get me wrong, we always lived somewhere nice, but childhood was spent criss-crossing the great midwest.
When I was 12 we moved further than in the past. Settling in St Charles, IL (a suburb about 40 miles west of Chicago) I had no idea I would end up calling it my "hometown". This was the longest we had ever lived anywhere. I went through middle school, high school and this is where a lot of memories were made for me.
I remember going to the Arcada Theatre for the midnight opening of the first Batman movie. There are memories with friends and family that will last a lifetime. The difference with this town was, a lot of places became ingrained in my mind. Perhaps it was just my age, or because this is the town I learned to drive in so I had to know my way around. For some reason, this place holds the largest share of memories.
I've since married and moved on to Woodridge, IL (about 20 miles east of St Charles). Woodridge holds the record, I have lived there now for over 10 years. Perhaps it will eventually take over as my "hometown" but for now it's still St Charles.

I miss riding my bike up and down the Fox River, taking a ride on the paddleboat and all sorts of things, luckily I'm still close. My family stopped out last summer and had a wonderful time strolling up and down the river, it brought back some great memories.
So, what makes a "hometown"? Is it your birthplace, the place you've lived the longest, or is it, like me, the place that holds a special place in your heart?
