Smoke alarms are a valuable tool to prevent you and your family from being harmed by fire. Ensuring that they are cleaned and always functioning should be a regular routine in your household chores.
New construction in Ontario since the early nineties has required smoke alarms on all levels. This ensures that they can detect and signal the occupants on all levels of the home. In addition they are required to be hardwired into the electrical circuit and interconnected throughout the home. This ensures that the alarms will always have power. The interconnection is required to signal the people on the second storey when the alarm in the basement is set off.
A few years ago the Ontario Fire Code required all buildings, regardless of age, to have smoke alarms installed on all levels. This allows any municipal fire official to enforce the installation of smoke alarms.
Bottom line. all levels of all home shall have a working smoke alarm in Ontario.

With any home purchase it is necessary to fully evaluate the wood burning appliances in a home. More than any other home appliance they need continuous maintenance. In addition these appliances can cause drastic consequences if they fail.
The Wood Energy Technical Training (WETT) group is an association that trains and certifies its members for the installation and inspection of wood burning systems. This certification requires a high level of training, testing and field experience. Ensuring you have your appliances inspected by an individual with these qualifications will ensure it is being inspected by a professional.
When the home with a wood burning appliance is being inspected by a home inspector ensure they have this specialized qualifications. In addition to ensuring a through inspection they can often provide letters to the homeowners insurance company.
