On October 9th (TOMORROW as of this writing) will be the 3rd monthly meeting of South Maui Sustainability.

This months topic is Conservation.

We will have Carl Freedman speaking on "Vast VS Practical - Our individual roles and opportunities towards sustainability".

We will have MECO, Water Dept and Solid Waste speaking and giving away conservation goodies including energy saving lightbulbs.

The meeting is from 6:30 - 8PM at Kihei Charter School. The meeting will start on time, so please come early for light pupus and getting aquainted.

Share ideas, and learn and enjoy all at one place and time. We all think Maui is No Ka Oi and we would like to keep it that way.

There is something in the air at the Maui Ocean Center. I mean really in the air on top of the entry roof you will now see six prototype wind turbines. They are there to supplement the electric that the Maui Ocean Center uses and are the product of AeroVironment of California. Just another example of renewable energy for Maui. Turbines are set to go online and begin production within the week.

A final inspection by the County was performed on Wednesday. This is a joint project between the Maui Ocean Center, AeroVironment and MECO which provided 10,000. in research and development for the project. The system cost to Maui Ocean Center was $46,029.

The turbines were installed on the outside wall of the Maui Ocean Center for a purcpose. The turbines utilize AeroVironment's "Architectural Wind" design technology. The wall acts as an accelerate for the wind that then goes through the blades which increases the energy output. Even though Maalaea is typically windy this will ensure greater output for the system.

KAI MALU IN WAILEA

Just south of Kihei in Wailea is my favorite new home community called Kai Malu. I recently had the opportunity to show buyers this special neighborhood. Located in the Resort area of Maui in Wailea, this complex had (as of this writing) 22 listings active listings that were available, ranging from 1,149,000. to 2.25 million. Differences in pricing are based on views and ammenities.

Kai Malu is a newer gated community in Wailea comprised of 75 (2) unit buildings for a total of 150 units. Duplex type condos. The community is nestled by The Blue Course in Wailea. Views of the Golf Course, Sparkling Pacific Ocean, outer islands and Haleakala views abound. A treasure of Tropical plantings line the neighborhood for you to enjoy and there are many open areas with walking pathways for the community as well. The maintenance fee covers Water, Sewer, Trash removal, all groundskeeping and pool/gym maint. and Exterior Insurance.

Kai Malu has what I consider to be one of the best community facilities on Maui. A huge disappearing edge pool, spa, bbq and kitchen, workout room, dry and steam sauna and meditation area surrounded by lava rock walls, streams, and abundant tropical plantings. But the best part of the community area is the VIEW. Huge ocean and outer island views that are totally unobstructed.

The MAPS showing location of this community are incorrect on most of the MLS listings. The correct maps are ones with Kainehe Pl and Kai Malu Pl so you can get a better idea of location. It is approx. 8 blocks to ocean via the roadway near the Shops of Wailea, great restaurants and the best of Maui's beaches.

The list of whos who and more turned out this year for the annual MAPA Garden Party. Held at the Wailuku Estate of the Yokouchi family, this annual fund raising event features some of the "top" restaurants on Maui and a sampling of their gourmet creations. I enjoyed the Hula Grill selection but my favorite was the ginger salad from Roys and the chocolate fountain for dessert was divine. Wine sampling was also the thing to try and the variety of Riesling this year was superb.

The highlight other than seeing all the beautiful garden hats the ladies wear was the live and silent auction. I managed to snag a sitting with our very own Maui artist Tonia Baney that I will use for my son Joseph. Her work is renowned and if you have ever been to the Kamehameha Golf Club the portrait of Frank Lloyd Wright is her work. I am needless to say "thrilled". The live auction was very spirited and the silent auction had more items than you can imagine.

All of this for such a wonderful cause. To keep the Arts alive on Maui. MAPA provides not only artistic lessons in dancing and acting but as David Johnson (MAPA Director) stated it provides especially the children a place where they "fit in" and can grow to their potential. David said this abet more eloquently than I did and even included a quote by John F Kennedy.
