Wilmington NC Riverfront: Gateway Project Gets the Thumbs Up!

The Wilmington City Council has unanimously given the thumbs up to the Gateway Project, a mixed use high rise development on 10 acres of industrial land near the base of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. The rezoning from Industrialuse gave the green light to the future project which will include housing, restaurants & shops, condos & green space, & 40 boat slips the cost is estimated at 150 million.

The local residents in favor of The Gateway believe the project will vitalize the area, grow business opportunities & provide desirable green spaces. Those in opposition were concerned about the increase increased traffic the quiet area would incur. Others feel the highrise project will clash with the character of historic downtown Wilmington. The Council had originally suggested the project be limited to 9 stories from the developers proposed 14. A compromise was reached at 11 stories.

Wilmington RiverwalkThe development group has a plan to address these concerns including the addition of turn lanes and traffic signals. They intend to create a pedestrian-friendly development with a transportation center beneath the Bridge that would support trolleys, small buses, horse-drawn carriages and bicycles. The developer has also promised to extend the Riverwalk & add a park.

One of the factors instrumental in moving the project forward was a compromise reasched over the buildings height. The Council had originally suggested the project be limited to 9 stories from the developers proposed 14. A compromise was reached at 11 stories.

Post approval the project still faces some hurdles. Outside investors are needed, a contractor willing to work with an existing design plan & a myriad of city mandates to comply with. The projected completion date is mid 2011.
