Remember Opposite Day?

Do you remember Opposite Day when you were in elementary school? Whether school sanctioned or peer imposed, as kids we would adopt an "everything is opposite" policy for fun and games. Well is it seems some have not outgrown the game, but the fun has certainly faded.

According to a number of recent articles in the Palm Beach Post, Palm Beach County real estate taxes may increase this year, despite falling values. This due to a legislative provision that allows counties to increase tax rates in times of falling values. Many Palm Beach County residents, especially those who recently voted in the tax reducing Amendment 1, have been surprised by this fact. Yet, like it or not, Amendment 1 only caps tax rates while values are rising. Therefore, according to the Post, some property owners may actually see an increase in taxes this year.

This adds insult to injury in an already tough economic climate. While the county must cover their operational costs, what better way to hurt an already lagging local economy than to raise taxes? The consumer is pinched as it is and our largely service-based economy desperately needs their dollars to keep flowing. The increase in taxes only stems that flow and further hurts the economic outlook. Our county, like many counties across the country, needs to take a hard look at streamlining expenses, trimming fat, and becoming more efficient.

Opposite Day is over and raising real estate taxes is not the answer to our current economic challenges.
