The stimulus package is benefiting Baton Rouge and the environment. Baton Rouge is using stimulus funds to make its transportation system more environmentally friendly. The buses that will be going green are going to be using CNG, compressed natural gas, a cleaner burning fuel for buses to run on. In a recent article in the Advocate Mayor Kip Holden was quoted saying (of CNG) "It's a cleaner-burning fuel, and in addition to the benefits to the environment, there are economic benefits because it's a resource from here in Louisiana that generates severance taxes," Holden said. So, if approved, the new buses will be good for Baton Rouge on more than one level. For more information on the buses and the use of the stimulus money read Scott Dyer's article in the advocate.
