Oconomowoc Community Profiles

Town of Ashippun

The southeastern corner of Dodge County is the westernmost portion of Lake Country, and offers a unique small-town atmosphere, a thriving area for business and beautiful, rural lifestyle opportunities, all within a short drive of the city.

Ashippun's geography is peppered with drumlins, eskers and moraines. There is a single lake in the town called Collins Lake.

The town is situated in a limestone region with outcroppings in the northwest section.

Ashippun is believed to be named for the American Indian word for raccoon, which is what the aboriginal people of the area called the river that runs through the eastern portion of the town.

Town of Ixonia

The Town of Ixonia is located on the eastern edge of Jefferson County. There are three public parks in the town. Ski Slide Park is a 12.7-acre community park that includes soccer fields, softball diamonds, a half-court basketball court and a youth football field.

Firemen's Park has baseball fields, park shelters, lighted tennis courts and playground facilities.

Kanow Park is a Jefferson County park. The 45-acre park's principal attraction is the Rock River, which flows through it. The river provides a variety of boating and fishing opportunities. The park has an open-sided shelter, fishing pond, open play field and children's play area.

The Town of Ixonia is centrally located between the City of Oconomowoc and the City of Watertown. Residents can drive either west or east to find a number of dining and shopping opportunities.

Village
of Lac La Belle

When it comes to one of the area's best-kept secrets, the Village of Lac La Belle ranks near the top and is located just to north of the City of Oconomowoc.

Lac La Belle is just a short drive from downtown stores and businesses and some of the area's finest restaurants.

The Lac La Belle Golf Club recently completed a renovation to its clubhouse. The members-only club offers one of the Oconomowoc area's finest and most challenging golf courses.

The village is situated in the northwest corner of Waukesha County.

City of Oconomowoc

The City of Oconomowoc is at the center of an area known for the natural beauty of several lakes.

Within the city are Fowler Lake and Lac La Belle, which are joined by a waterfall and are the centerpieces of many year-round activities.

The city's history dates back to 1837 when Charles Sheldon first came to the area to build his log cabin. From that time on, word of the area's natural beauty and wealth began to spread, bringing settlers such as John S. Rockwell who built the grist mill, owned the first store and hotel, and donated sites for the churches.

Oconomowoc, a Potawatomi word meaning "river of falling waters" or "where the waters meet" or "river of lakes," was incorporated as a city in 1875 when its population was 2,121.

No matter what time of the year it is, Oconomowoc is home to many events such as holiday parades sponsored by the Oconomowoc Area Chamber of Commerce, Festival Week and the nationally renowned Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts, held each August in Fowler Park.

Town of Oconomowoc

The Town of Oconomowoc has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s, when the area's first settlers arrived in the area.

Before 1844, the Town of Oconomowoc actually was first part of Summit Township. In 1844, the Town of Oconomowoc was born. Today, the town continues to be a popular destination spot for tourists, businesses and homeowners because of its country charm and rural atmosphere.

Several unincorporated communities are part of the Town of Oconomowoc. Okauchee, which sits on the shores of Okauchee Lake, Mapleton and Monterrey are all part of the town.

The town is located in the far northwest corner of Waukesha County and offers a mix of agricultural and residential areas. The town is also home to several light industrial and retail businesses.

The Town of Oconomowoc is bordered by the Town of Ashippun in Dodge County to the north, the Town of Ixonia in Jefferson County to the west, the Town of Summit, Village of Oconomowoc Lake and City of Oconomowoc to the south, and the Town of Merton to the east. The town surrounds the Village of Lac La Belle.

Village of Oconomowoc Lake

The Village of Oconomowoc Lake is a small community nestled along the shores of one of the area's biggest lakes.

Oconomowoc Lake's history is noted in the great mansions that overlook the lake and were once home to some of the most influential people in the Midwest. The Pabst family, which once owned and operated Pabst Brewing in Milwaukee, still calls Oconomowoc Lake home today.

Along with the historic homes that dot the landscape, the village offers residents many conveniences by being home to several small businesses.

Many people call the village home because it offers quiet country living while being close to shopping and businesses in surrounding communities.

The village is home to the Oconomowoc Lake Club, which hosts events and galas throughout the year. Oconomowoc Lake is close to several public and private golf courses in the area and is just a short drive from major highways.

Oconomowoc,Wisconsin. Lake Country at it's finest!!

Walking down Main Street or Armour Street, you are greeted by many famous names. You get a feeling that people really liked it here. Wrigley had a mansion, the owner of Montgomery Ward had a 23 room, 20 bath mansion on the Lake. It is just the time to come and let Tom Braatz show you what a beautiful city is really is.

One can take a drive trough the City of Oconomowoc, located in Western WaukeshaCounty and be amazed how beautiful homes sit on Pristine Lakes, and the Lakes surround this beautiful city. Full of History, and loaded with charm, Oconomowoc is truly a magnificent city to visit, and to work and live in.

The pioneering and developing of Oconomowoc began in 1837 when the first white man, Charles Sheldon, came to this area to build his log cabin. He found that the Pottawatomie Indians had already laid the foundation of what they called Coo-No-Mo-Wauk (where the waters meet, or river of lakes) which in time would become Oconomowoc.

As the town grew and word of its beauty and natural wealth spread, tradesmen began to arrive. One such early settler was a young man named John S. Rockwell. He built his griss mill, owned the first store and hotel, and denoted sites to all the churches. He started the fire department, the library, the elementary school, and more.

Fueled by its growing reputation, Oconomowoc entered a new era marked by the title "Newport of the West." This started in 1870 and continued into the 1930s. Lured by Oconomowoc's great beauty, families of wealth from Chicago, St. Louis and Milwaukee crowded its Lake shores with palatial country mansions and lavished landscapes. At one time, Lake Road was referred to as "Presidents Avenue" since Taft, Grant, Cleveland, Coolidge,McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt had visited and enjoyed Draper Hall and the hospitality of its wealthy residents.

Today the summer mansions are year round homes, and the largely intact, late 19th century downtown and many stately historic houses are reminders of those years. Historic walking tours are available.

This truly is a very beautiful city, and can be enjoyed by all.
