On a brisk cold morning in Paradise, dropping by an older friends home for a warm coffee and donut, I felt a coolness, where I was resting. I asked my friend Dee, if they had checked the home for energy leaks recently. Her reply was no. Well, I definately feel a cool draft and that could be costing her extra energy money. so, with that, we set out to find out what was leaking and if there was anything we could do about it.
Many years ago my husband and I installed weatherstripping and insulation for a PG&E program. First we checked the windows and found some leaks there. We looked at outlets, yes there were leaks there too!
I suggest we get an energy audit.
As this was a older home, we knew it would have many leaks because building restrictions were much more loose then. If you live in an area where temperature drop into the low 30's you will feel the cold trying to enter your home in every crack or pipe which enters your home.
Newer built homes have tight windows, doors, the exteriors are wrapped and the insulation values are higher.
If your home is older it may prove wise to get a energy audit to seal up any holes, cracks and openings, which can increase your winter enrgy bills. The comfort of this home was improved with minor sealing and caulking around windows, doors and pipes.
Can you find the energy leaks in your Paradise California Home?

Before the Next Storm covers Paradise Ca with white, prepare your family and home
Prepare for possible isolation in your home by having sufficient supply of dry, seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove as regular fuel sources may be off. Winterize your Paradise Ca home by caulking windows, insulating attics and walls and making sure doors seal tightly. Clean rain gutters; repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that could fall during a storm.
Insulate pipes with insulation or newspapers and plastic and allow faucets to drip a little during cold weather to avoid freezing. Keep fire extinguishers on hand, and make sure everyone in your house knows how to use them. House fires pose an additional risk, as more people turn to alternate heating sources without taking the necessary safety precautions.
Learn to shut off water In case a pipe bursts. Know ahead of time How you can help elderly, disabled friends or neighbors. When the power gets cut off because of downed trees or telephone pole that may snap under the heavy snow conditions, its good to check on your neighbors especially in a small upper mountain town like Paradise.
If your my neighbor, I would be checking on you.

Save energy & installing solar in your Paradise Ca Home?
One form of renewable energy is solar. Installing solar panels on your Paradise Ca home, allows you, the home owner to harness the power of the sun and save money at the same time. Whoppeee. Now I know right now it's snowing in Paradise Ca but that is no excuse for not thinking about going solar in the spring of 2009, especially with the state of economy. Maybe that is why Butte county offices have installed solar panels to cut energy costs.
Did you know that solar panels are more efficent and cost effective now than ever before. Here's how they work? Solar panels work by harnessing light rays and transfer the heat through collected cylinder that stores hot water for later use. Amazing huh!
Solar panels will convert any form of light that hits it and will still be effective even on cloudy or dull days, which when it comes to winter in Paradise or Magalia, we have our share of overcast days. It is a misconception that you need continuous sunlight. A solar panel can provide almost all of your hot water during the summer months and about 50% the rest of the year round.
There are a number of different varieties of solar panels. A roof top system works in a similar way except the collectors are more prominently visible on the roof itself rather than hidden away. Alternatively, if you have the space in your garden, you can install a standalone system, where the collector sits on the ground away from the house altogether.
With the tall ponderosa pine trees that surround most Paradise California homes a stand alone system may be best. Are you worried about the cost of installing, well
What if you could rent solar panels? What rent solar panels....yes I said rent solar panels.
Search for companies in your area that rent solar panels Citizenrē REnU is one of the larger well known solar renting companies that does business in all but nine states.
Now what is holding you back from going solar?
