Competition Does Make A Difference

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post about Murphy Oil Company opening a gasoline station on the new Wal Mart Super Store property. Today I will share the positive effect it has had on our community.

Less then a month ago gasoline prices in our community were $.15 to $.30 per gallon higher then the neighboring communities some at a high of $3.89 per gallon.

While there has been a recent adjustment in the price of a barrel of oil, I believe the greatest impact on our pricing is Competition.

Locally, a large gasoline franchise has their product priced at more then $.55 per gallon less then it was just ten days ago.

Notably, they are priced at two cents per gallon less then Murphy Oil. That in itself tells the story. All of the other local retailers are matching Murphy's prices.

Competition is a wonderful thing and today we are enjoying the rewards.

ICE A Simple Concept For Cell Phone Users

"ICE", a very simple concept for cell phone users. ICE stands for "In Case of Emergency".

All you need do is enter the telephone number of an emergency contact (son, daughter, neighbor..) and, instead of labeling it with that person's name, label it as "ICE".

If your telephone is then found, or if you are in an accident where the police or emergency personnel need to reach a contact for you, they will know to look for ICE.

This has been a national program for several years that deserves repeated attention.

Florida Makes $571 Million In Loans Available To Build & Buy Housing

Florida's Governor, Charlie Crist signed an executive order on October 2, freeing $571 million in state-backed financing that real estate developers and reluctant buyers can tap to build and buy new homes.

Florida will float tax-exempt bonds, backed by Florida's gold-standard rating on Wall Street, to provide developers a line of relatively cheap credit. They are hopeful builders will start building homes and apartments again soon.

Homebuyers can use the state-backed financing to get low-interest loans through the Florida Housing Finance Corporation.

The Governor also paired the $571 million capital program with $541 million in anti-foreclosure money coming into Florida from the federal government, thanks to the Housing and Economic Recovery Act passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bush in July. Taken together, more than $1 billion is being made available to aid Florida's struggling economy.

Money, expected sometime next year from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will be used to purchase and rehabilitate foreclosed properties.

Money also will be available to low and moderate income home buyers for help with down payments and closing costs.
