Automotive Management Services Inc. selects Ft. Myers location for Porsche- AMSI sees potential and expects rapid rebound for the area!

Dealership to open in 2009

Company sees potential in city, expects rapid rebound.

Another luxury European auto dealer is planning to set up shop in Lee County.

Porsche of Fort Myers is expected to open in the Fall 2009 in a 14,700-square-foot showroom to be built off Daniels Parkway, near the entrance to Interstate 75 in south Fort Myers. The closest Porsche dealership is located in Naples.

The new showroom will add to the wave of high-end auto dealers establishing a presence or expanding existing facilities in the Fort Myers area in the past 18 months. Volvo of Fort Myers opened last September in a building off Colonial Boulevard. Mercedes Benz of Fort Myers and BMW of Fort Myers moved to new, adjacent facilities along U.S. 41, south of Gladiolus Drive in south Fort Myers. Mercedes opened in January 2007 and BMW in March.

The Porsche dealership's owner is Automotive Management Services Inc. of West Palm Beach, which currently has Jaguar, Land Rover and Audi dealerships in Lee County. It also owns Porsche of Naples, along with dealerships for seven other luxury European car makers in Collier County.

AMSI recently completed Phase I of a 30,000-square-foot building on U.S. 41 in Naples that will house its Bentley, Rolls Royce, Bugatti, Maserati, Aston Martin, Jaguar and Land Rover lines. The company's Porsche dealership is located next door.

The company's rationale for expanding into Lee County during this time of economic turmoil is multi-faceted.
"The main reason is - one, both Fort Myers and Naples can support most of the major German makes," said John Harris, managing partner of Naples Luxury Imports, the AMSI subsidiary that controls its Collier County operations. "Secondly, although Fort Myers is just 40 miles from Naples, it could be in a different state during the season. And three, in a down market, the price is always right. We actually see Fort Myers, although it went downstream very quickly, we think it's going to to bounce back very quickly too."

Lee County should continue to attract a significant number of year-round residents and retiring baby boomers, further enhancing its attractiveness, he added.

Porsche owner Allan Parvey of Fort Myers is excited that trips to Naples for service may be coming to an end. He said he's been a customer there for about 10 years.

"It'll be just so much more convenient," he said. "They're one of the best Porsche dealerships around. I've had Porsches for years and they've given me the best treatment and service of anyone I've dealt with. They treat you like you're very important to them as a customer and when you go in for service, they help you promptly. They accommodate you in any way they can."

Construction of the Fort Myers facility, which will be east of I-75 near the Cracker Barrel restaurant, should begin in early 2009 and be completed in time for the debut of Porsche's four-door, four-seat Panamera sedan, that Fall, Harris said.

There will be 25 employees at the dealership when it opens, a number that could rise to about 35.

Cape Coral Executive Golf Course to reopen October 4th

Renovations bring golf course up to par

Condominiums will not be there, but an extensively renovated Cape Coral Executive Golf Course will reopen to its members Saturday.

Mike Hayes, owner and operator of the nine-hole course at 1006 S.E. Fourth Place, decided not to have condos built after hearing some protest from neighboring residents.

Longtime members also appreciate Audrey Hopps, the longtime course manager.

"She does all the handicaps, she does the pairings, she does the winners list," Leitch said. "It wouldn't be the same place without her."

"The shop manager, Audrey, is a tremendous plus," Colter added. "She is friendly with everyone. She's a fantastic ambassador."

Hayes said he plans to have a grand opening for the public Oct. 4.

"I think we did the right thing," he said. "We kept it a place for people to come, and I think they will. The course is in excellent condition and will be very challenging."

Longtime members also approve of Hayes' work at the golf course since he took it over eight years ago.
