We share our talants....

Kiwanis was coined from the American Indian expression "Nunc Kee-wanis" and means "we trade" or "we share our talents."

Kiwanis is a worldwide community service organization made up of organized volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. There are many clubs and some cities have several clubs. Check the Kiwanis Int'l website to locate a club that fits your need to support your community.

The Kiwanis Club of San Marcos has performed countless community service projects from helping to restore local historic homes to supplying books to kindergarten students through the Early Literacy Program. Our club meets Friday mornings from 7:15 until 8:30 at Simply Ambrosia. For those that prefer to meet in the evenings, starting in October, we will have one meeting per month in the evening at a different location.

If you believe community service has a place in your life and you would like to make a real impact in your community, then Kiwanis could be the place for you.

Who is "Mello-Roos"

Prop 13, which passed by California voters in 1978, limited the ability for local public agencies to increase property taxes in order to fund needed improvements and services.

California Senator Henry Mello and Assemblyman Mike Roos co-authored the Mello-Roos Community Facilities Act of 1982 in order to help fund public improvements of streets, sewer system, police protection, fire protection, ambulance services, schools, parks, libraries, museums and other cultural facilities.

Municipal bonds are generally sold by the CFD in order to provide the large amount of capital initially needed to build the improvements or fund the services. There are many different types and there is contact information provided by the taxing authority, which allows tax payers to find out exactly what the CFD (Mello-Roos)is for and the duration of the payment on the bond. Even after the bond is paid off, it is possible that the CFD will continue at a lower rate to maintain the improvements.

The taxing authority will not state "Mello-Roos", which causes a misconception that some parcels do not have a Mello-Roos tax. The line item will have the letters CFDwithin the verbiage, which means that this item is a Mello-Roos tax.

Palomar Community College, San Marcos CA

With over 300 degree and certificate programs available for students, there is definitely something for everyone in the Palomar Community College district.

Founded in 1946, the Palomar Community College district has grown to be one of the largest community colleges in all of California. In addition to the main San Marcos campus, the Palomar Community College system has eight satellite locations from Poway to Pendelton and from Fallbrook to Borrego Springs.

Over the next several years, the San Marcos campus will be undergoing a comprehensive modernization project. The most recent addition to the campus is the Natural Science Building, which is the prototype for the regeneration of the San Marcos campus.

Even though the campus will be getting a grand face lift, students will still be able to enjoy the well maintained Clocktower area full of mature shade trees and a sprawling cool green lawn.

In addition to a great number of mature trees and shrubs throughout the campus, there is also a wonderful Arboretum, which was established in 1973 and is a very tranquil place to relax and contemplate.

The Boehm Gallery below is located near the campus theater at the south end of the campus. The Boehm is a full scale art Gallery that exhibits both student and professional art. The brick-work design on the side of the building is the result of an artist who rescued a number of oddly-shaped and misfired bricks to create a unique design for the Boehm building.
