Nashville Parks and Greenways - Places to walk/run/bike Part 2

One of the favorite places to exercise on the South West side of Nashville is Belle Meade Blvd. Located between the steps at the entrance to Percy Warner Park and Harding Place in Belle Meade. The boulevard itself is a divided 4 lane road with a beautifully landscaped median. There are signs posted that the cars must drive in the right hand lane, except to pass. Then, along the median is a striped area for the walker/runners. The speed limit is 30 mph and it is STRICTLY enforced.

It's 2.6 miles from the bottom of the stairs to St. Georges Episcopal Church located right there at the corner of the Boulevard and Harding place. Because there are turning places the full length of the Boulevard, one can customize their length to very short or the full 5.2 miles. It is a gently rolling street that is not flat, but does not take your breath away. Those that want a little more length and effort can add the short loop in Percy Warner that is an additional 1.8 miles and wraps around at the top of the stairs. More on the Percy Warner trails next!
Parking is available at each end. The public is welcome to use the Church parking lot Monday through Saturday, and on Sundays before and after Church services. At the other end, there is plenty of street parking and extended field parking on the east side of Belle Mead Blvd at the corner of Page.
It's a beautiful street with some of the most prestigious homes in area Nashville area. Belle Meade boasts former Vice President Al Gore as a resident. It is also home to Cheekwood our local Botanical Gardens and Museum.

Nashville TN Parks and Greenways - A series on Walking/Running/Biking in Middle Tennessee
This is Part One of a 5 part Series designed to help you get to know the green spaces available here in Nashville and in the surrounding areas. Exercising is more and more becoming a family sport and knowing where to go can make it so much more enjoyable.
After training for the Country Music Half Marathon for the second time this year, I discovered that there are so many different places to get in a long run that many people don't know about. My trainer, Traci Calhoun, got me started with the running a couple of years ago and SHE didn't know where to run. So here goes!
Stones River Greenway can be accessed from many different places. It runs along the river and over to Shelby Bottom in Downtown Nashville.
I start at Percy Priest Dam, just off I-40 east.
Exit at Stewarts Ferry Pike and head south to the light where Bell Road turns to go over the dam.
The parking lot and trailhead are on the left. You will be looking at the dam from the parking lot. Then follow the paved trail under the Interstate. The trail is very well marked at the .25 mile markers. It's wide enough to accomodate several walkers and still have room for bikes to pass.
If you're doing the entire greenway, it is 10 miles long and passes shopping, residential areas, a golf course, parks and schools until it ends near Opry Mills at the Cumberland River. You can now cross the river and continue through Shelby Bottoms.
OR if you're looking to get anywhere between 3 and 6 miles you can do either of the following:
You can stay to the right after the first 1.5 miles and you will continue running along the river until you reach the Kohls on Lebanon Road in Hermitage. There is another trailhead there. It's 3 miles one way. There's a pretty steep hill that will get your heart pumping. Then it's downhill for over 1/5 a mile, part of it on the boardwalk. It's a beautiful trail.
If you prefer a slightly easier and shorter route, follow the sign going left at the split that takes you to the YMCA on Lebanon Road. You still have some hills but not quite as steep and the length is 5 miles round trip.

The median price of a single-family home decreased 5% from 2008. The median price was $171,100 verses $179,995 in 2009. The median price for a condo it was $142,146, down 13% from $162,900.
Inventory was down slightly from last year with 24,592 properties available in July of 2009, compared with 25,023 in July of 2008. With closing continuing to be down, having less homes on the market allows those that are trying to sell to have less competition.

Just announced, Chargers for Electric Cars coming to Nashville!

Nissan is working with Arizona based ECOtality Inc. whose subsidiary, Electric Transportation Engineering Corporation has been chosen by the U.S. Department of Transportation to receive $100 million grant. President Jonathan Read said that eTec has a contract with Nissan to provide charging stations for their new electric cars. Nissan is building 5000 electric cars to debut in the fall of 2010.
Other cities in Tennessee to receive the stations are Chattanooga and Knoxville. The grant with other participation will total close to $200 million and will cover 2500 stations in 5 regional market places. Other cities will include Phoenix, Portland, San Diego, Seattle and others.
Chargers for Electric Cars in Nashville and throughout Tennessee will be helped financially as Governor Bredesen has committed $5 million in his 2010 budget for infrastructure. Investing in the future of Tennessee has always been a priority to Gov. Bredesen. "It's also about creating jobs and strengthening our economy" he said.
There will be various models for these stations. Mr. Read said that there will be one that's inexpensive at $1500 which will be free to the public. Then they will also have some that can charge a car in 30 minutes. Though there is a partnership with Nissan, these charging stations will work with any plug in car.
It's nice to see Tennessee up front and center on Environmental issues.

Personal Trainers in Cool Springs may be hard to find if you don’t know where to look!
Traci Calhoun has been a certified personal trainer since 2004. She has what is called an ACE designation or American Exercise Certified. This is important because it means she takes her career seriously by taking Continue Education classes as required by her certification. She currently works with her clients at A Game Sportsplex on Gothic Court in Cool Springs. The way her program is set up, you don't have to join a club to work with her. You pick your days and times, workout a payment schedule, ie how many times a week to train and that's what you pay. One of my personal issues with other trainers was that you had to spend hundreds of dollars to belong to the club where they worked. Not with Traci. You can find her there most weekday mornings before the sun comes up.
Being a Personal Trainer in Cool Springs is not what Traci had in mind when she graduated from MTSU in 1986 with a degree in Hospitality. After 16 years of working at Gaylord Entertainment, Traci saw her own weight gradually increase to over 180 pounds. At some point we all look in the mirror and wonder how we got there. She began in summer of 1998 determined to loose the weight. By December, she was engaged to be married and she set her goals by buying a wedding dress the size she desired to be. By the following summer, she was there. Thus
A personal trainer was born! Traci teaches her clients total fitness, including diet, cardio and strength training. She helps them set achievable goals and works with them at their level.
I started looking for a Personal Trainer in Cool Springs and hooked up with Traci in the Fall of 2004. Besides being over weight, I had no upper body strength. I was ready to get my body in shape. I have followed her faithfully as 2 different locations have closed. This year, because of her influence, I participated in my second half Marathon. I can personally recommend her to anyone trying to get in shape. What ever shape that may be. You can reach Traci on her cell phone at 615-351-4857.
