Moving to Hawaii with your pets and Animal Quarantine Information

The big move to the Hawaiian Islands with your four-legged family members really is not that difficult! It just takes time and planning. I can tell you about it first hand. My husband and I made the move from California with our two dogs & a cat. By the time we got our luggage and arrived at the Quarantine Area, they were ready for release. Our Boxers

Living the dream and moving to Hawaii with your pets can be a smooth transition as long as you follow the guidelines set by the Hawaii Dept of Agriculture Animal Quarantine Laws. The process includes rabies shots, bloodwork, microchips, and a health certificate. From beginning to end, the entire process takes about six months depending on how timely you are. If you following the guidelines, you can get Direct Airport Release for your pets. If you don't follow the process correctly, your pets could be held in quarantine for up to 120 days. The whole reason behind the strict quidelines is that Hawaii has no rabies and and prior to 2003, all pets had to be held in quarantine for 120 days.

Make sure you go to Hawaii Dept of Agriculture Animal Quarantine Laws, get the requirements, and review the info with your vet. If you or your vet have any questions or concerns, you can call the Animal Quarantine Station at (808) 483-7151 or the Airport Facility at (808) 837-8092. What is almost unheard of these days is that someone almost always answers the phone, a real live person, not an answering machine!
