Some equipment banned at NC Landfills

via MYCabarrus.com

CABARRUS COUNTY – With today's ever-changing technology, discarded computer equipment and televisions are increasing in volume and if not disposed of properly, can potentially introduce toxic materials into solid waste landfills. Beginning July 1, those items and other e-waste will be banned from all North Carolina landfills, including the Cabarrus County Landfill. Cabarrus County and the Cities of Concord and Kannapolis are introducing new programs to help enforce this ban and ensure proper disposal of these toxic items.

Items will be accepted for recycling for a small fee at the Cabarrus County Household Hazardous Waste facility and at the Cabarrus County Construction and Demolition Landfill. Additionally, residents of the City of Concord can schedule curbside collection of e-waste, at no charge, through the City's Customer Care Center at 704-920-5555. Residents in the City of Kannapolis can hold e-waste items for an e-waste collection day. The date of this event will be announced soon. There will be no charge for Kannapolis e-waste collection on the selected date

CONCORD, N.C. -- A huge piece of history is now for sale in downtown Concord. It is a stately 9,000-plus square foot home that was built in 1900 by one of the most famous families in the region.

"I think just of the majesty of it,” said Michael Eury, Executive Director of the History Cabarrus Association. "It is a testament to textiles when they were in their heyday."

Indeed, 65 Union Street North in Concord tells an incredible story. It was home to James William Cannon. He started the textile company Cannon Mills that eventually became Pillowtex which closed in 2003.

"That was the backbone of this community,” Eury said.

The home is for sale now for $1.15 million. A great-great granddaughter of Mr. Cannon owns the house and lived there until recently.

"You enter off this wonderful great front porch," said broker Diane Honeycutt. “It is a beautiful view as you come up into the dome."

Side by side with original features like that stained glass dome, there are modern updates like his and her master baths and lavish closets.

From 1969 to 1994 it was home to Cabarrus Academy, which later became the Cannon School. A classroom turned playroom in the back is a reminder of those years. There is also a basketball court in the backyard leftover from the school.

Honeycutt hopes to find a buyer who simply walks in and falls in love.

"Having been home to generations of the Cannon family and then home to generations of students and citizens here in our area who had the opportunity to go to school there and then back in the hands of a family member, it just kind of adds to the heritage and uniqueness of this property,” she said.

Being Conservative...in many ways.

Nowdays not only are times tight financially but we have a big responsibility to watch our energy usage for the environmnent. I hope everyone can start at least two of these items right away. As Realtors, we are responsible for setting an example and we can instill these habits in our clients almost without them even noticing.

  • Install a programmable thermostat to keep your house comfortably warm in the winter and comfortably cool in the summer.
  • Use compact fluorescent light bulbs with the ENERGY STAR® label.
  • Air-dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher's drying cycle.
  • Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use.
  • Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into power strips; turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use (TVs and DVD players in standby mode still use several watts of power).
  • Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120°F.
  • Take short showers instead of baths.
  • Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.
  • Drive sensibly. Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gasoline.
  • Look for the ENERGY STAR label on home appliances and products. ENERGY STAR products meet strict efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Visit www.energysavers.gov for more energy-saving ideas.

HAFA not Going HALF WAY>>>>

Servicers have now completed 10,438 short sales through the government's Home Affordable Foreclosure Alternatives program since it launched in April 2010, according to the Treasury Department.

HAFA was designed to provide an incentive to servicers for completing short sales and deeds-in-lieu of foreclosure for loans that fail out of the larger Home Affordable Modification Program. Through June, servicers started 21,412 short sales and DILs, up 20% from the month before. A total of 10,754 were completed, up 25%.

JPMorgan Chase (JPM: 34.06 0.00%) is the programs leading performer, completing nearly 3,600 through the program, including nearly 1,000 in June alone.

Wells Fargo (WFC: 22.93 0.00%) was second, completing more than 3,100 since the program launched and roughly 700 in June.

Bank of America (BAC: 6.51 0.00%) completed 1,873 HAFA transactions, an increase of roughly 200 in the month.

What people don't understand is that most banks require that you default before you can qualify for a short sale. In North Carolina, many of these people have jobs, they just have to default because they owe so much more than the homes are worth and they have to sell for one reason or another.
