CONCORD, N.C. -- A huge piece of history is now for sale in downtown Concord. It is a stately 9,000-plus square foot home that was built in 1900 by one of the most famous families in the region.
"I think just of the majesty of it,” said Michael Eury, Executive Director of the History Cabarrus Association. "It is a testament to textiles when they were in their heyday."
Indeed, 65 Union Street North in Concord tells an incredible story. It was home to James William Cannon. He started the textile company Cannon Mills that eventually became Pillowtex which closed in 2003.
"That was the backbone of this community,” Eury said.
The home is for sale now for $1.15 million. A great-great granddaughter of Mr. Cannon owns the house and lived there until recently.
"You enter off this wonderful great front porch," said broker Diane Honeycutt. “It is a beautiful view as you come up into the dome."
Side by side with original features like that stained glass dome, there are modern updates like his and her master baths and lavish closets.
From 1969 to 1994 it was home to Cabarrus Academy, which later became the Cannon School. A classroom turned playroom in the back is a reminder of those years. There is also a basketball court in the backyard leftover from the school.
Honeycutt hopes to find a buyer who simply walks in and falls in love.
"Having been home to generations of the Cannon family and then home to generations of students and citizens here in our area who had the opportunity to go to school there and then back in the hands of a family member, it just kind of adds to the heritage and uniqueness of this property,” she said.
