Cell Phone Ban starts October 26, 2009 in Ontario

Ban On Hand-Held Devices Starts In October

McGuinty Government Making Ontario's Roads Safer

Ontario's ban on hand-held devices while driving will take effect on October 26, 2009.

The new law will make it illegal for drivers to talk, text, type, dial or email using hand-held cell phones and other hand-held communications and entertainment devices.

Following a three-month period that begins October 26, where the focus will be on educating drivers, police will start issuing tickets on February 1, 2010.

Studies show that a driver using a cell phone is four times more likely to be in a crash than a driver focused on the road.  Other studies show that dialing and texting carries the highest degree of risk of all cell phone-related activities.

Police, paramedics and firefighters will continue to be allowed to use hand-held devices when performing their duties. All drivers may use hand-held devices to call 9-1-1.

QUICK FACTS

  • Under Ontario's new law, fines of up to $500 can be levied against distracted drivers who text, type, email, dial, or chat using a prohibited hand-held device.
  • Ontario joins more than 50 countries worldwide and a growing number of North American jurisdictions that have similar distracted driving legislation including Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, California and New York.
  • Teens and young people under 35 are the most frequent users of cell phones while driving.

Mortgage Fraud -Protect Your Investment

Protect Your Investment Against Mortgage Fraud
Many homeowners are unaware of the dangers posed by identity thieves when it
comes to their real estate investment.  Unfortunately, real estate title
fraud is on the rise.  According to the Canadian Association of Accredited
Mortgage Professionals (CAAMP), real estate industry insiders now peg the
average case of real estate fraud at $300,000.  In comparison, the RCMP
estimates the average credit card fraud case in Canada to be $1,200.
Protect yourself and your investment with these tips:

1. Check your credit reports

Equifax Canada

and

Transunion financial and bank statements regularly for inconsistencies,

unknown charges and unauthorized credit inquiries.
2. Don't give out personal information in person, over the phone or on the
Internet unless you know who you are dealing with, how it will be used and
if it will be shared.
3. Protect your mail, be alert to billing cycles and when bills or mail
haven't arrived.
4. Shred any documents or materials with personal or financial information
prior to discarding them.
5. Seek advice from a real estate expert who is licensed in your area when
shopping for a home.
6. Speak to a mortgage professional about how title insurance could help
protect your investment.

Toronto's new "311" service

Toronto's new "311" service was launched today.  The new service, available by telephone by dialing direct to 311 or on line at Toronto.ca/311   will provide a "one stop" phone number for residents to access City services and report problems.  311 operators are trained to answer thousands of questions and can request service for potholes, broken watermains, and solid waste issues, among others. Residents will be given a service request tracking number and can easily follow-up on the progress of an issue.  The service is available in 170 languages and through TTY for the hearing impaired. The 311 call centre is open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

311 is the largest, most exciting customer service improvement undertaken by the City of Toronto since amalgamation. 311 improves accessibility to non-emergency City services and information, and will increase the City's effectiveness in responding to public inquiries.

Not sure how to report a pothole? Need to request pick-up of an old appliance? Looking for a program at your local community centre? Simply call 311. Our customer service representatives are available to assist you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

More than just a phone number, 311 Toronto provides access to a wide range of online services, and in the coming months will expand with online service requests and online tracking. Information counters are also available at City Hall and most Civic Centres during regular business hours, offering in-person assistance and free telephone access to 311. You can also contact 311 by e-mail or fax.

How 311 works

Toronto's 311 system is the largest in North America to launch with end-to-end service integration. What this means is that many of the City's different work order systems will effectively work together to bring improved service delivery to the residents and businesses in Toronto. Another key component of the 311 system is the City's knowledge base. As of launch day, the knowledge base contains more than 15,000 answers to 13,800 questions.

311 vs. 911 and 211

311 is for non-emergency City services, programs and information.

Mortgages for recent immigrants to Canada

Recent Immigrant to Canada? Discover Mortgage Products Designed for You It's a common myth that if you are not a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, you do not qualify for a mortgage.

The good news is that various lenders offer mortgage products specifically tailored to the needs of non-landed immigrants. While most financial institutions traditionally have insisted that new immigrants provide a down payment of at least 20% to 35%, there are now lenders who offer qualifying new immigrants (or those who have been transferred to Canada by an employer) mortgages which feature a much lower down payment.

Call me with your questions. I will introduce you to a mortgage specialist who is knowledgeable with new immigrants.
