Well the weather men were finally Right. They said we were getting snow, and LOTS of it. They predicted 12"-18" and we ended up with 28"-30" here is Prospect and across most of Prospect. I took a quick ride around Prospect and snapped some photos. It was the most snow in a 24 hour period since 1888. yes EIGHTEEN Eighty Eight!
It started last night about 10pm and snowed until just about lunch time here today. Almost everything in the Prospect and Connecticut for that matter, was closed. Here in Prospect Olivers opened late, CVS was open, the Sunoco Station, Mobile and Shell were all open.
Dave Jones Realty even opened for a few hours.

Wishing you and your family a Very Happy, Healthy and Safe New Year! Here is to a prosperous 2011 from all of us at Dave Jones Realty.
Let this coming year be better than all the others. Vow to do some of the things you've always wanted to do but couldn't find the time. Call up a forgotten friend. Drop an old grudge, and replace it with some pleasant memories. Vow not to make a promise you don't think you can keep. Walk tall, and smile more. You'll look ten years younger. Don't be afraid to say, 'I love you'. Say it again. They are the sweetest words in the world. -Ann Landers

Let me apologize upfront for what is sure to be a "log winded" (no pun intended) post. I feel there is a lot of information that needs to be gone over.
One of the hottest topics in the local news (and the local Restaurants) is the proposed Wind Turbine project located at 178 New Haven Road, Prospect. BNE Energy is hoping to construct two 1.6 megawatt wind turbines (windmills). This site is
located directly across from Lee Road and George Street on Route 69 in Prospect. These turbines would be 328 Feet tall, and the blade would reach approximately 492 feet into the air. There has been a ton of debate about the potential dangers and also the potential negative impact on the Real Estate values.

First I want to give a little info on my background. I am a lifelong Prospect resident. Prospect is a close knit community with a great "Small Town" feel. I am very involved in the community, I was a youth Soccer coach, little league baseball coach, Opened my Real Estate brokerage here in Prospect, and I was also elected to the Zoning Board of
Appeals. One thing that I found interesting about this whole windmill project here in Prospect is that no one has a say in it. What I mean by
that is it does not go before a town vote, it doesn't have to be voted on by the Zoning Board, or the Zoning Board of Appeals here in Prospect. It is actually more involved to get a deck put on your home than to have a project
like this put into action. With a deck the process has to go through a series of events including zoning approval, obtaining a building permit,
mailing neighbors to see if there is an objection, a public hearing and here in Prospect CHESPROCOTT (The Health Department) approval. With the windmill project proposed by BNE, there is a sole decision maker, the "end-all, be-all". This is the "Connecticut Siting Council".
The Connecticut Siting Council consists of nine members from all over the state. Five members are appointed by the Governor and four members are designees of the Senate, the House, the Commissioner of Environmental
Protection and the Chairman of the Department of Public Utility Control. At least two members are experienced in ecology and not more than one member has an affiliation, past or present, with any utility or government utility regulatory
agency. The Council reviews applications on the need for and placement of cell towers, power plants, power lines and other energy (like windmills and wind turbines) and telecommunications infrastructure.
You can read through the extensive application and Letters From Mayor Bob Chatfield as well as State Representative Rosa Delauro on the Siting Council's website here.
While I think both sides have some valid points, I also think there are some items that need to be addressed.
Thinking Green: I am a firm believer that we need to investigate Green Resource alternatives. We have a Green Building REALTOR specialist in our office (Peter Vaccarelli) and had a Green energy audit completed last week. Dave Jones Realty also always recycles, turns off lights, turns the heat down and tries to "do our part". I believe there are definitely Green Solutions, and Wind Turbines MAY be one of them. I do not believe a small suburban town like Prospect CT is any place for such a project however. After all, Prospect IS the “Best Small Town in Connecticut.” I would think a Windmill or Wind Turbine project would be best suited in a very rural area, away from Suburbia. Even better, maybe the project could be completed off shore similar to a off shore oil drilling operation.
Tax Benefit to Prospect: I am all for anything that will generate revenue for this
fantastic town I call home. The $150,000 annual revenue that Prospect would generate from the wind farm is substantial. The people who are against the wind farm from www.SaveProspect.com have said that this $150,000 income "will be offset by the decrease in tax revenue from nearby homes if they lose value." While I do believe the homes near the wind farm will in fact be devalued, this in no way "Decreases the taxes." Obviously everyone's Property values have fallen in the past two years. It is also obvious that even though our property values went down due to the economy, none of our taxes went down. This $150,000 is
equivalent to the tax generated by approximately Twenty (20) new $400,000
homes. I would personally like to see the twenty homes built here in town, and no wind farms. After all, these twenty homes would only help to increase property values.
Prospect Could Use the Energy: The electricity generated does not go to Prospect. BNE is a business, the electricity the wind farm generates is sold to the electric grid. Prospect residents will pay no less for electricity than they do now.
I think a public hearing should be granted so the public can voice their opinion and get solid answers to ALL their questions. I think more research needs to be done on existing wind farms, the impact it has had on their communities (positive and negative), and even think of alternate locations. There are miles and miles of undeveloped land in Rural sections of Connecticut that will have far less "neighborhood" impacts. It is great that Prospect is able to pull together in times of tragedy, and in times when we feel as though we are being pushed around. I still believe Prospect is the best small town in Connecticut, and I for one am willing to fight to keep it that way!
Do any of my Activerain Friends in other parts of the country have any experience with this type of resource coming to town?
What are your opinions on it?
Well I guess we all knew it was coming, and I guess since we are New Englander's we are lucky it took this long. The first snow of the season hit our section of Central Connecticut. Most of the Neighboring towns of Cheshire, Naugatuck and Waterbury had light accumulation like 1-3". Prospect had twice that, after all the "Town on the Hill" always seems to get harder hit.
On my way to the office I snapped some photos around town. Did the storm hit you?
