Cherokee County Bus Crash - Another side of the Story

Some of you know by know that I am a Cherokee County bus driver and I was still on my bus when I heard bus 427 call in to 500 (our headquarters and supervisors) and my heart broke at the sound of his voice.Cherokee County School Bus Wreck

Yesterday the tragedy that hit Cherokee County broke my heart, but not only did the wreck break my heart but so did the support (or lack of it for the bus driver) and the comments that was said from the media.

Now let me start off by saying I am NOT condoning the wreck, any time there is a wreck it is heart breaking. But I did want to give you another perspective - a view from a drivers seat.

I have been a school bus driver for many years and every morning I get up and the weight of the responsibility that rides on my shoulders is incredible. Everyday I think about the fact that I am about to have 60 plus students lives in my hands and the weight of that fact is tremendous. I think about the fact that many parents have trusted me with their precious treasure, just like I trust mine into the hands of two other Cherokee County bus drivers. My children chose to ride their own assigned bus, rather than ride with me, most of it has to do with sleeping later. :-)

So I two girls togetherstart my route and it begins with elementary students and you would think they would still be sleepy and quite and some are, but not all. By the time I reach the elementary school I on average have had to say "sit down bottom to bottom and back to back at least a dozen or more times and this is only a 20 minute drive. Not only that but the children in front think I am yelling at them because I am trying to get my voice up over the engine, keep facing forward and project my voice backwards. There is no telling how many times at this point that I have had to take my eyes off the road to check and see who is touching who or who is now yelling at another one. Sometimes the kids are the best of friends and sometimes the kids are back there rough housing with each other. You never know what one day to the next what is going to go on. And this is all in the morning, when driving home in the afternoon, these kids have been sitting in a sit all day, they have an exorbitant amount of energy built up and have not been able to release it. They haven't been able to talk to their friends all day, they may have been given a piece of candy for being good in the classroom and now it is time to ride the bus home. I'm sorry but for some reason they think this time is a free for all play period and the bus driver is the grumpiest person in the world because they don't see the problem with moving (jumping) from seat to seat, leaning over the back of the seat to talk to their friends or maybe even having a paper fight. The things my middle and high school students tell me that THEY did to their last bus driver makes me wonder how that poor bus driver ever drove those students without wrecking.

I truly believe that this is what could have happened, and it could happen to anyone of us, someone was cutting up or misbehaving in the back and may have been for some time, and the driver simply took his eyes off the road to see what was going on and correct the situation, when the tires on the right side left the road and in correcting that issue, he over corrected and went off the other side of the road. This happens all the time with drivers in regular vehicles and very seldom with school buses, you only hear about the school buses tho.

I have yet to figure out, why people are so critical of bus drivers (yes, there are some drivers that maybe shouldn't be driving, but then I watch regular drivers and think the same thing EVERYDAY!). This is one of the professions that is not well respected and yet it is most difficult. You have 60 plus students that you are to maintain control of, while some of them have no intention of behaving and this all stems from kids being kids, while watching out for drivers who pull out in front of you because they don't want to be BEHIND the bus.

After this wreck yesterday, I stopped my bus and talked with each load, I have two different ones, and I reiterated why they needed to sit down and why they needed not to scream at the top of their pretty little lungs and why they didn't need to be leaning over the seats and all these other WHY's.

And as a parent, and a school bus driver, I'm asking all the parents who put their children on a bus, please take the time (not just once, but often) to talk to your kids about the way to ride a bus and the reason why they need to ride it safely and correctly.

Interesting tip, did you know that they have stacked 3 buses on top of one another and the bottom one DID NOT crush. School buses are safe and the drivers are constantly trained. And like every other driver out there, things beyond our control happen.

Cherokee County School Bus

As A School Bus Driver for Cherokee County, I want to say Thank You to those Parents that trust me every day with your precious children, it is a privilege and responsibility that I take very seriously.
