Darien, Illinois

Darien, located 20 miles outside of Chicago, is the youngest city in Dupage County, but its roots stretch back more than 100 years. The city began as a collection of farms and homes along an old stagecoach line that is present-day Interstate 55 (the Stevenson Expressway). This settlement soon became known as the Cass village. In 1890, the village of Lace was established near what today is Cass Avenue, Plainfield Road and 75th Street. Old Lace School now houses the Darien Historical Society. After World War 11, farms became subdivisions, four of which joined to create Darien in 1969. The town was named after Darien, Connecticut.

Most of the homes in Darien are single-family, but a new wave of development has increased offerings to include townhomes/condos and contemporary luxury homes. Today, Darien residents can take advantage of many services.

A cultural center of the community, the Indian Prairie Public Library moved into a brand new 43,000- square foot building in the 1990s and has more than 111,000 books on its shelves. The library district serves 44,000 people in the area with adult and children’s pro- grains. Concerts and other programs round out the library’s offerings.

The Darien Park District maintains 14 parks, including Darien Community Park, the site of the annual Darienfest, and offers programs for children, teens, adults and senior citizens. The park district also helps operate Sportsplex, which offers a variety of sports and wellness activities, including skating. In keeping with a desire to provide extra service for residents and to promote shopping in the city’s stores, Darien offers a free trolley that takes residents to the city’s shopping and recreation centers.

Elementary students attend schools in Darien Elementary District 6 1, Cass Elementary District 63 and Center Cass Elementary District 66. High school students attend Hinsdale South High School in Hinsdale District 86 or Downers Grove South High School in Downers Grove District 99.

Interstate 55 forms the south border of Darien and makes the city convenient to Chicago. Pace Suburban Bus Service is available to take commuters to Downers Grove train stations.
