It's Showtime in the Everglades
Engineers are about to begin building 22 linear miles of levee to contain the largest free-stranding, above-ground reservoir in the world.
Per an article in 3-08 Florida Trend magazine-
The Everglades triangular-shaped pool will cover 16,700 acres and hold as much as 62 billion gallons of water. It is a vital component of Everglades restoration and a prominent example of work done at state taxpayer expense to preserve South Florida's delicate ecosystem.
Officials plan to pump water that would otherwise be channeled out to sea into the new reservoir and release it gradually into an adjoining storm-water treatment area. Once phosphorous and harmful nutrients are removed, the clean water will seep when needed into the Everglades to sustain wildlife and preserve endangered species.
"We could fill all the swimming pools in South Florida with this reservoir," said Shawn Waldeck, project manager. "The whole idea is to get water to the Everglades at the right time, with the right distribution, the right quantity and the right quality."
