Oregon Health and Science University a major Coup For the Florida Treasure Coast area

“It’s absolutely going to change Port St. Lucie and the neighboring Counties, by adding a more diversified tax base, more quality jobs and improved education.”
Per an article In the TC Palm newspaper, Port St. Lucie has committed to providing $53 million in improvements in the 120-acre research park that will house Torrey Pines and the Oregon Health & Science University’s Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute. In addition, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has asked the Legislature to allocate $60 million from the Florida Innovation Fund.
Local officials added that aside from directly creating 200 jobs, the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute should also lead to new jobs that will support the company’s scientists and staff.
Additionally, a new hospital will also be a logical spin-off from the institute, Torrey Pines and Mann, per City Councilman Christopher Cooper.
Vero Beach Fl, January 17th , 2008. Vero Beach Realtor Karen Burke remarked: That is great news as the promise of high-tech, high-paying jobs in the local biotech cluster will give this areas students further incentive to stay here once they’ve completed their education.

When asked how this could help the local Real Estate Market, Karen remarked-Besides our great weather and lifestyle, plus the fact that people want to live here and get out of the cold northern areas-More jobs in a high paying industry will definitely attract more people and other related businesses will benefit and grow as a result.

Flying In?
Vero Beach and Sebastian each have muncipal airports that are open to general aviation traffic. If you are flying in by private plane, please don't depend on high density or skyscrapers to guide your way. More likely you'll just see the sea, the river and lots of tree tops!
The Vero Beach Municipal Airport received the 1995 General Aviation Airport of the Year Award from the Florida Department of Transportation. The winning airport is selected based upon accomplishments in the areas of airport facilities improvements, airfield safety and security, aesthetics, and management. Commercial air service is available from Melbourne, (located 25 miles north of Sebastian), Orlando or West Palm Beach.

One if by land...
Interstate 95 and U.S. 1 both provide north/south travelers access to the eastern side of the county on the mainland. Route A1A runs the entire length of the barrier island, from Brevard County in the north (Sebastian Inlet) to St. Lucie County in the south (north of the Ft. Pierce Inlet).
Two if by Sea...
The Indian River Lagoon, a part of the Intracoastal waterway, is the "access by sea". Cruise on in from either the Sebastian or Ft. Pierce Inlets. To make life easier on both yachtsmen and motorists, a new high span bridge opened in Vero Beach in the summer of 1995 replacing the drawbridge.
Our county is sometimes discovered by international or out-of-state yachtsmen who arrive via the Indian River. It's been known to happen that some who put into port for a night fall under the spell of our area and become part-time or permanent residents.

No matter how you arrive, there, on the opposite shore will be someone to make you feel welcome in Indian River County.
