Service industry anyone? Tips and Advice for the small business

The third major area you might consider when it comes time to dig your teeth into internet marketing or a home business is to create a service of your own. Let's take a closer look.

Couple paying bills by online banking

The type of service you might offer is really as wide open as your talents, skills, and motivation allow. If you're leaning more toward the "work at home" model and not necessarily internet marketing, you might develop a business plan around pool cleaning, dog grooming, carpentry, copy writing, or maybe even helping people get their resumes in tip top shape.

The upside to offering a service is you are no longer constrained by the work office or 9 to 5 work day. And if your business grows to be more than you can handle with the number of hours in the day - hire help. Stay home! Schedule jobs! Count cash!

The downside to providing a service is, unless you do hire help, your income is limited by how many hours each day you are able to physically perform the service. But if you have a particular skill, cashing in on it might be a perfect way to transition to a work at home lifestyle.

Next time, we'll talk about creating your own product.

Affiliate marketing for the budding entrepreneur

Affiliate marketing is a quick, inexpensive way to break into internet marketing but keep this in mind. Statistically speaking, hardly anyone makes money doing it. Then why are we even wasting your time talking about it? The main reason most people don't make money with affiliate marketing is they don't try!

You might think you're trying when you buy some Google ads, toss them up on the internet and sit back to count the cash rolling in. Anyone hear those crickets? If it was that easy, we'd all be rich.

Don't get me wrong. For every product out there, a handful of affiliates have found the key to Fort Knox and are making ridiculous amounts of money. If you approach affiliate marketing smart and take the time to learn, you could be living the lifestyle of the rich and famous.

As with anything, stick with it!

But what is affiliate marketing? At its very basic, affiliate marketing is when you undertake your own marketing efforts to sell someone else's product. In return, they give you a cut of the sales. Sometimes as much as 90% if you're hawking informational products from Clickbank.

How do you market for affiliate commissions? We mentioned Google Ads but that's not a good way to start until you have some experience. If you have your own newsletter or website, you can do a product review or otherwise suggest it to your visitors/readers.

A very popular and successful free way to market is via articles. Check out EzineArticles.com for the lowdown on how this works.

Blogging for Bucks

Let's focus on one way to make money through internet marketing and home-based businesses in the Internet Age. Blogging falls under both categories but, however you decide to classify it, this one can be great fun. What's better than spending a few hours every day writing about your passion and getting well paid for the effort?

Of course, nothing is stopping you from writing about your passion immediately. The making money part? That's going to take a little more time and effort.

Back to basics. If you haven't heard the term before, "blog" is a shortened form of "webblog", and refers to the practice of making regular posts to an online journal. In the early days, most blogs were of the personal nature, "what I'm doing" or "what I'm thinking." Today, blogs are big business and have grown way beyond their modest beginnings.

Pick a topic like NFL football. You can bet there are plenty of blogs dedicated solely to discussing every excruciating detail as the season progresses. You can also bet a handful of those blogs are getting hundreds of thousands of visitors each month and a certain percentage of those visitors are taking advantage of related goods and services advertised on the blogs.

That's how you make money blogging.

You can get started blogging at no charge by using the free, Goodle-owned platform Blogger (also known as Blogspot), or get your own domain name and hosting and use the uber-popular (and search engine friendly) Wordpress.

If you like to write, blogging might be the perfect online business for you.

Exactly how can I make money online?

Here's where it gets fun. Before you undertake any sort of internet marketing or home-based business endeavor, you have to decide what you want to do. It might seem repugnantly obvious to say but this is the point where most people get stuck and never make it out of the starting gate.

Don't agonize over making the perfect choice for your business right now. At this stage, we're painting with a very broad brush. Later will come the time to choose actual products, etc and conduct the market research to find out of it's a viable idea.

For now, I'll consider it progress if you can choose a general direction from among the following:

Blogging - With current technology like Wordpress, It's ever so easy to build up an authority website filled with your own opinions. As readership grows, you can monetize it through AdSense from Google, selling ad space, or by promoting affiliate products or your own goods and services.

Affiliate Marketer - there are hundreds of thousands (probably millions) of informational and real world products out there, already created, just waiting to pay you a commission for selling them. Think Amazon or Clickbank. These online catalogs make it easy to pick and choose the product you want to promote.

Create your own product or service- While downloadable digital information products lead the charge in profit margin. You can create and market any sort of of item or service your expertise or motivation allows.

There are your three basic choices - blog, market affiliate products, or create your own.

Good luck!
