Summit County Colorado's Loveland Ski area looks to expand services

Loveland Ski AreaLoveland Ski area located at the intersections of highway 6 and Interstate 70 just on the eastern side of the Continental Divide is looking to the Dry Gulch drainage for cat-served skiing and riding.

The basin just northeast of the ski area's existing lift-served terrain has been in Loveland's permit boundary for quite some time.

It's also a popular backcountry spot with relatively easy access for Front Range and Summit County residents being only 45 minutes to some of Denver outer suburbs and 20 to 30 minutes to many Summit County locations.

A U.S. Forest Service master plan for Loveland dating to about 1997 identifies the area as suitable for guided skiing.

Loveland Ski area has not done much since they put in Chair 9 a lift that added service to the area's highest ridges in 1999. which added additional access and high country terrain.

The Forest Service authorized Loveland to take snowcats into the drainage this spring to explore the Loveland Mappotential for a commercial operation. The master plan does not call for lift-served skiing in the drainage basin. Any activity, including cat skiing, would be subject to site-specific environmental studies and the idea is in a very early phase, with no formal proposal on the table.

The Dry Creek area could include as much as a 1,000 acres of new terrain. But will have a tough time making a go at it since Keystone has added expanded cat-skiing in the past few years in response to customer demand for so-called Backcountry Light experiences, and the addition of the Montezuma Bowl expansion last year at Arapahoe Basin.

Keystone Colorado's New Gondola And Investment Opportunities

Keystone Colorado's new Gondola

Keystone GondolaConstruction is under way for the new Keystone gondola. The new gondola base will be moved into River Run village and will be over 100 yards closer to all of the condos and the parking and shuttle bus stops in River Run and make many of the buildings virtually ski-in ski-out! (Springs, Red Hawk and Black Bear in particular) It will also have a mid-station for boarding and un-boarding about 25% of the way up. It is currently on schedule and will be ready for the 2008 / 2009 ski and snowboard season.

New gondola features:

•· More than 100 yards closer to River Run Village and the parking lots.

•· Great views from floor to ceiling windows.

•· Level walk-in for easy access and easier loading for wheelchairs, strollers and mountain bikes.

•· Skis and snowboards carried inside cabin.

•· Midway terminal for loading and unloading in both directions to be used as a mid-mountain lift or downloading at the end of the day.

•· 2,400 passengers per hour capacity.

•· 8 passengers.

•· Length: 9,586 ft.

•· Vertical Rise: 2,307 ft

•· Trip Time: 11.78 minutes

The most likely Keystone Resort properties to see an immediate impact and gain from the new gondola placement are obviously The Springs and Red Hawk Lodge. If you already own in either of these buildings this could continue to be a great investment opportunity and we recommend keeping your properties in these developments. Other buildings that will be affected are, Black Bear Lodge and Jack Pine Lodge. The move has the potential to increase property values in these 2 developments due to these properties garnering the greatest benefit to the gondola new location. River Run also looks to benefit greatly from the gondola's new location.

There is also potential for Vail Resorts to install a surface lift to the Lakeside Village in Keystone, and there may be an investment opportunity near Keystone Lake. Since preliminary plans have already been submitted to Summit County for a remodel of the Mountain House area, it is likely that the Mountain House project would take precedence, but the possibility of connecting River Run and The Keystone Lakeside Village cannot be ignored even if it is included as possible long range plan.

Arapahoe Basin Summit County Colorados Spring Ski Heaven

With nearly all the Ski resorts in North America now closed Summit County has one that stands alone. Arapahoe Basin or as we locals call it A-basin. Just 5 miles south of Keystone Colorado it has become know as the Legend. A-Basin is usually the first resort in the nA-basination to open and almost always the last to close with an average season of about 8 months.

With one of the best snow reports in years A-basin has announced plans to stay open until June 8th. Last nights storm brought a fresh 6" of powder to an already strong base of over 60". And the resort is still reporting all terrain and lifts being 100% open.

What makes this resort so fun every spring is The Beach. I know were talking about skiing but think chair lifts meets the sand. As soon as March comes around the beach is home to countless music tastes (some bad, some good, some we wont speak of!), smells of different foods cooking on grills, "different" and original clothing and it is one heck of a good time!

The beach is not only home to parties for friends and family it is also a place for charity events, employee parties, children's birthdays and even demos. June A-basin promises us another great and fun filled spring. Check out whats happening this year.
