There is an ongoing property tax scam being perpetrated here in Los Angeles County.
Private companies are mass-mailing Los Angeles County residents with official looking letters that charge property owners an unreasonable fee to file a "Decline in Value Reassessment Application (Prop 8)".
These solicitation letters are formatted in a way that could mislead people to believe that they are from the County. These letters can confuse homeowners into paying as much as $179 to file for a Prop. 8 Decline in Value Review when the assessor may be doing this already and/or the homeowner can easily file FOR FREE!
Please, if you receive one of these letters, make sure they are authentic. If they are not, report them to the Assessors office, immediately. With the uncertainty in the mortgage and real estate markets in the Los Angeles area, many are looking to take advantage of homeowners.

The CAC chair, Lorinee Jackson, wrote that "this is an important subject to be informed about unfortunately is is happening more than you may think, maybe to an elderly neighbor or even a family member."
Tens of thousands of elderly Americans are abused in our country every year. It happens in their homes, in their families' homes and even in elderly care facilities. By learning the signs to look out for, you can help prevent elder abuse and know how to act in their best interests. You may know someone who you suspect is being taken advantage of. This could be emotional, financial or physical. This meeting will teach you what actions to take to prevent this.

Finally, the lawmakers in our state have passed a budget!
After a monumental week of long negotiations, the state legislature sent the budget on to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday.
I'll write more about this later. Expect higher taxes and lots of cuts in spending.
The stock market fell again today, closing over 100 points down at 7365 (Dow Jones). This is the lowest close in 11 years. General Motors stock hit 74 year lows today.
Mortgage rates continue to be very attractive for those who have solid credit, equity and employment.
